Two days after - Reagan stated his position during a meeting with a small group of journalists in the Oval Office, Percy said that he urged diplomats of two Arab countries to persuade "the Palestinians" to renounce terrorism and to recognize Israel's right to exist in peace. If the Palestinians do that, Percy said, the United States can then help them ultimately to have "some sort of homeland" in a fed- eration with Jordan. Human rights will con- tinue to be a prime issue to the Reagan Adminis- tration, Rep. Jack Kemp (R-NY) told a meeting of the International Council of Bnai Brith. While praising President Reagan and Secretary of State Alexander Haig for their statements on foreign policy, Kemp noted that Haig has placed greater emphasis on combatting world terrorism. War Crime Charge Leveled at Assembly Line Worker CLEVELAND (JTA) — A trial, expected to last as long as seven weeks, to de- termine whether John De- mjanjuk, a 60-year-old naturalized citizen of Uk- rainian origin lied about his participation in Nazi war crimes when he applied for citizenship in 1958, opened in U.S. District Court in Cleveland Tuesday before Federal Judge Frank Bat- tisti. Demjanjuk, a Ford as- sembly line worker since 1952, has been charged by A the U.S. Immigration and • Naturalization Service • (INS) with supplying false information about his ac- tivities in World War II. _ _ TOURV NELS SCNAGURM CVFA LA I Ni I N G ETC. 4 ,ROAST DUCKLING COMPLETE FOR AROUND $6? The INS contends that Demjanjuk served as a guard in the Nazi extermination camps at Treblinka and Sobibor in Poland in 1942-1943, that he tortured countless in- mates and herded Jews into the gas chambers. Demjan- juk insists that he was a prisoner of war at that time. U.S. attorneys Norman Moscovitz and John Hor- rigan are expected to fly in nine survivors from Germany, Israel and Uruguay to testify against Demjanjuk. The INS began its inves- tigation into his back- ground five years ago on the basis of affidavits from death camp survivors , de- tailing atrocities allegedly committed by Demjanjuk, who they referred to as "Ivan the Terrible." His first name at the time was Iwan. Gaza City Blast Kills Bystander TEL AVIV — Palestinian terrorists tossed a grenade at an Israeli army truck in the heart of Gaza City ear- lier this month, killing an Arab and wounding 20 other people, according to a military spokesman. Israeli troops swept through the city following the blast and arrested dozens of people. Women's American ORT has more than 140,000 members. "The struggle for human rights must go on," the Con- gressman declared. "I don't think the United States can afford to signal the world that it is relaxing its fight for human rights." Contending that the U.S. has applied a double standard in the human rights struggle, "rewarding our enemies and punishing our friends," Kemp urged a reversal of that practice.
