Technion Research Leads
to Farming Breakthrough
HAIFA — Research by
engineers in Technion's Fa-
culty of Agricultural
Engineering may lead to
use of rocky mountainside
soils, until now considered
either entirely unfit for, or
at best "marginal" for ag-
ricultural use.
"Until recently, farmers
used a rotor machine to re-
move rocks from a depth of
60 to 70 centimeters of soil
(23-27 inches), the
minimum thought neces-
sary for farming. However,
once the rocks were re-
moved, the amount of rock-
less top soil amounted to
less than 60 centimeters,
and it was necessary to re-
peat the proc'ess. This is an
expensive, fuel and time
consuming process," ex-
plained research professor
Israela R'avina, dean of
Technion's Agricultural
Engineering Faculty.
A Technion survey, still
underway, has shown it is
possible to grow on a much
thinner layer of soil, reduc-
ing investment "many fold,"

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Viktor Brailovsky, who was
arrested last November on
charges of "defaming the
Soviet state and public or-
der," has been transferred
from Moscow's Butyrka
Prison to the notorious
Lefortovo Prison where
Anatoly Shcharansky was
held incommunicado for 14
months, it was reported by
Burton Levinson, chairman
of the National Conference
on Soviet. Jewry.
Brailovsky, a leading ac-
tivist of the Jewish emigra-
tion movement and editor of
the journal, "Jews in the
USSR," was reported last
month to be seriously ill by
his wife, Irina. She said
then that the interrogation
of Brailovsky had been
temporarily suspended be-
cause of his medical condi-
tion.
Meanwhile, Levinson re-
ported that the number of
Jews who left the Soviet
Union last month was 850,
the lowest in months.

Work being carried out in
experimental Galilee plots
seeks to determine the exact
depth needed for growing
and to prove yields are not
lesg than in other soils. In
agricultural engineering
laboratories, the physical
qualities of rocky soils are
being examined.
"We have found it is not
only possible to grow in
these soils, but in some
cases, there may actually be
advantages," says Ravina.
"Soils with stones in them
may have, for example , bet-
ter aeration."

WASHINGTON — "Myer
Myers, a contemporary of
Paul Revere, is one of the
most respected American
silversmiths. Every major
public collection has at least
one of his pieces of silver,"
said Donald Fennimore,
associate curator of the
Winterthur Museum, Wil-
mington, Del.
Myers' silver pieces are
among the most expensive
in the world.
Myers, 1723-1795, con-
sidered to be the first
American Jewish artist,
was a highly skillful and
versatile master craftsman.
He created the first Ameri-
can examples of Jewish
ceremonial objects and also
was distinguished for his
general ornamental and
functional pieces.
Curator Fennimore was a
speaker in a series of lec-
tures given in conjunction
with the Daughters of the
American Revolution ex-
hibit: "The Jewish Commu-
nity in Early America,
1654-1830," at • the DAR
Museum in Washington.
The exhibit continues until
March 15.
