THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, February 13, 1981 Political, Economic Change Sought by Israel Movement By YITZHAK RABI (Copyright 1981, JTA, Inc.) NEW YORK — Israel can prosper and "stand on its own feet" only if the present political and economic sys- tem is fundamentally changed. This is, in essence, PEDICURE Only $10 MANICURE Only $4 559-7858 Sandra Myers Nail Clinic the message of the newly founded Azm'ut (Indepen- dence) movement in Israel. Dr. Ezra Sohar, the foun- der and leader of the move- ment, said that "We believe the prevailing economic system in Israel, a system that gives the government total control of all resources and, therefore, is stifling free enterprise, is detrimental to the economy and to the country's image." Sohar, 58; a well-known professor of medicine who GREENE BROS. and JOANNA WESTERN provide Natural Sophistication at 2 5% SAVINGS • Verticals • Decorative Woods • Woven Woods • 1" Wood Blinds • Shutters and other fine. He also charged that "the massive foreign aid and philanthropy Israel receives do not strengthen the country. On the contrary. It has weakened Israel by pro- viding the power base upon which the political establishment and its in- numerable bureaucrats thrive and perpetuate the distorted Israeli system of government." The Azma'ut movement, with a few hundred mem- bers so far and a couple of thousand sympathizers, ac- cording to Sohar, advocates a free enterprise system in Israel. He claimed that "a free economy in Israel is the only way to attract Jews from developed countries to come and settle in Israel." Sohar, who was active with Ariel Sharon in the Shlomzion movement sev- eral years ago but left it be- fore the 1977 national elec- tions, said that in his cur- rent visit to the United States he wants to bring American Jewry a "mes- sage of optimism." "We believe that Israel can be self-supporting, that it has the human re- sources to create and de- velop a sophosticated technological economy based on the toil of its citizens and can assure, in return, a high standard of living," Sohar said. The failure in Israel is not a failure of people but a failure of a system, and this is what I want to con- vey to American Jews." He said that American Jews can do a great deal for Israel, but by investing rather than by giveing "charity." He claimed that "by giving charity, Ameri- can Jews only strengthen the bureaucracy in Israel, which is one of the major ills of the country." Asked to define the Az- ma'ut movement in the tra- ditional political terminol- ogy of either left, center or right, Sohar declined. He said, however, that his movement supports Jewish settlements on the West Bank established by private citizens with no gov- ernmental support. He expressed the belief that his movement will be- come better known to the Is- raeli public in the months ahead and, as a result, Az- ma'ut will have some repre- sentatives in the next Knes- set. • Jewelry Designers & Manufacturers of Original & Unusual Creations • Authorized Appraisers • Estate Liquidators 31313 Northwestern Farmington Hills TZ't- 0 -5S ,g,t' 851-7333 IT'S THE COFFEE THAT'LL MAKE EVERYONE THINK YOU DID WHEN YOU DIDN'T!
