There are today about
90,000 Jewish immigrants
from the Soviet Union in the
U.S. They have been ab-
sorbed by more than 130
Jewish communities since
1972.
The Council of Jewish
Federations, as central body
of the Jewish communities
considers Jewish identifica-
tion as its goal for Jewish
immigrants from the Soviet
Union. The CJF is therefore
now seeking to establish the
extent to which the dif-
ference between Jewish
identity and identification
exists among the 90,000
emigres; how many of them
are involved Jewishly in the
communities into which

Nearly all communities
have segments that suffer
from conflicting feelings
about the newcomers. The
CJF Task Force on Jewish
Identity. composed of pro-
fessionals, rabbinic
authorities and educators,
is of the opinion that the
most difficult problem of all
is the widespread feeling
that the immigrants have
betrayed a promise to Israel
.in their coming to the
United States.
'In some communities
there is dissatisfaction
with the aggressive de-
mands of the emigres.
The incessant demands

are not expressed as re-
quests for help but the
"due" to which the
emigres think they are
entitled. This, of course,
does not help community
feelings.

NEW YORK (JTA) —
Thomas Dine, executive di-
rector of the American Is-
rael Public Affairs Commit-
tee (AIPAC), told more than
100 metropolitan area
Jewish community leaders
that there was "a new
buoyancy in Washington
today," as well as "pains and
problems" that must be
overcome by forming "new
functional coalitions in
support of a strong Ameri-
can policy toward Israel."

The general attitude of
the CJF is: whether a
Jewish immigrant from the
Soviet Union has been Rus-
sified or is a committed Jew,
he suffers from a sense of
isolation, alienation and
loss known by an refugees.
The CJF leadership there-
fore believes that he will re-
spond best to an approach
that is characterized by sin-
cere warmth and caring.

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The
International Maccabia_
Games Committee, meeting
here in preparation for the
quadrennial "Jewish
Olympics" to be held in Is-
rael July 6-16, was greeted
on behalf of the government
by Education Minister
Zevulun Hammer whose
portfolio also covers sports
and culture. He used the oc-
casion to promote aliya by
Jewish athletes from all
over the world and to warn
of the dangers of assimila-
tion.
Hammer, a leader of the
National Religious Party,
told the committee mem-
bers representing 30-odd
countries, "The biggest suc-
cess of the Maccabia will be
when we shall not have
them as a world Jewish
sports event, but as a main
sports competition for Is-
raeli sportsmen. The Mac-
cabia should be the means
to the end of attaining our
ultimate goal."
