Meat Scandal
Arises in Israel

DETROIT

P

TEL AVIV (JTA) — Med-
ical files related to cases of
food poisoning during the
past decade are under re-
examination as a result of
an emerging scandal over
the marketing of tainted
meat from the carrion in the
guise of freshly slaughtered
meat.
The criminal practice,
with apparent underworld
connections, is believed con-
fined to the Haifa area. The
secretary of the Israel Poul-
try Raisers Union has been
arrested on charges of sell-
ing diseased turkeys for
human consumption.
Similarly, one of the
largest meat wholesalers in
Haifa is under detention for
allegedly supplying carrion
to kosher butchers, sausage
manufacturers, restaurants
and catering establish-
ments.
Although Jerusalem and
central and southern
regions of the country are
believed to be free of tainted
meat, there has been a
dramatic drop in meat con-
sumption among all Israelis
while book dealers report an
upsurge in demand for veg-
etarian and dairy cook-
books.

SALAMI OR
HOT DOGS

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Israeli exhibit at the in-
ternational book fair in
Cairo has been moved to a
differen location in the ex-
hibition hall and was re-
ported to be operating
smoothly after a series of
embarrassing and provoca-
tive incidents before and
after the fair opened last
week.
' The situation of the Is-
raeli display adjacent to the
Palestinian stand made
trouble inevitable from the
start. When the Israeli am-
bassador to Egypt, Eliahu
Ben-Elissar, visited his
• • country's booth, a raucous
• exchange developed be-
• tween Israelis and Palesti-
• nians.

The organizers of the
• fair responded by order-
• ing the Israeli flag re-
• moved, a demand that
• triggered bitter indigna-
• tion among the Israelis.
The Israel Publishers

• Association, which is spon-
• soring the exhibit, seriously
• considered withdrawing
• from the fair. But the Egyp-
• tians, aware of the serious
• repercussions this could
have on the peace process,
• proposed that the Israeli
• stand be moved to the main
• exhibition hall where the
• Western countries' pavil-
• ions are located.
