International espionage,
chilling suspense and
twisted strands of love and
loyalty can all be found in
Alan Michael's new novel,
"Diamonds" (St. Martin's
Press).
The story focuses on Ju-
lian Heck's pursuit of his
father's identity. Julian,
who had originally decided
that he wanted no part of his
father's heritage, had even
changed his name (from
Heckowitz) and moved to
California, as far as possible
from New York's 47th St.,
where his father, Sam, had
spent his life trading
diamonds.
Following his father's
death, and the shocking
realization that his inheri-
tance does not include a
single gem, Julian sets out
on a perilous search for the
inheritance he is sure
exists. Obsessed by his pri-
vate quest, Julian becomes
an unknowing pawn in a
network of diamond dealers
and secret agents, all
searching for the stones for
a different end.
The search reveals a
different legacy to Julian
— a knowledge of the ex-
traordinary man his
father had been. Since
the grim days in Au-
schwitz, when he had
engineered many a Jew's
escape with diamonds,
Sam had kept on with his
trade in the most valu-

able of gems for the most
basic of human rights.
Alan Michaels, whose
own father was a diamond
dealer, is the author of more
than 250 books under a
number of pseudonymns.
