Geomorphologist Finds Links
Between Negev, Mars Surface

Dulzin Chosen Chairman

TEL AVIV (JTA) — The honorary president. Plans
committee of Shalom have been made to publish
Aleichem House here Aleichem's works in Yid-
has named Jewish Agency dish and Hebrew and
chairman Leon Dulzin as its English translations.

BEERSHEVA — An off-
beat connection ties cold,
windswept Mars, the
Earth's nearest planetary
neighbor, with Israel's des-
ert university, Ben-Gurion
University of the Negev.
That link is Dr. Haim Tsoar,
resident sand dune expert.
Tsoar, whose specialty is
aeolian geomorphology —
the effect of wind action on
the earth's surface — used
the knowledge he gained
while closely observing
dunes in the Sinai to deter-
mine the wind direction on
Mars by studying its sand
dunes.
Tsoar's fascination with
dunes began during the
Six-Day War when,
stationed in the Sinai, he
caught himself wondering
what processes create dunes
and cause them to migrate.
At the time, he was casting
around for a subject for his

master's thesis and decided
to focus on dunes, though it
meant, in essence, self-
education since none of his
geomorphology professors
were researching that area.
"The dunes I'm par-
ticularly interested in,"
explains Tsoar, a
member of the BGU
geography department,
"are the ones known as
linear or 'seif dunes,
which are the most wide-
spread type of dune in the
world's deserts. Seif is an
Arabic word meaning
sword and these dunes
were so named because
they resemble a curved-
bladed, sword whipping
its way through the des-
ert."
"I found it very easy,"
Tsoar recalls, "to study the
movement of the dunes from
Ben-Gurion University,
which is conveniently lo-
cated in the midst of a des-
ert. I would drive 100 miles
into the Sinai, position my
equipment, which included
a wind recorder for measur-
ing velocity and direction,
smoke candles, small-cup
anemometers, and the use
of fluorescent-dyed sand as
a tracer, drive back into
Beersheva and wait for a
sand storm."
"Since the dunes were so
accessible I could obtain,
through my experiments,
accurate, scientific meas-
urements which I followed
over a three-year period.
Tsoar was called on by
NASA, while he was in the
United States doing post-
doctoral work, to join the
team analyzing the many
thousands Of photos trans-
mitted back to Earth by the
Viking mission to Mars
which took place during
1976-1980. Tsoar con-
cluded, utilizing experience
gained with Sinai's dunes,
that the Martian dunes are
active and subjected to more
than one wind direction.
The summer winds on Mars
blow from the north pole
southward and, in addition

3,000 Protest
Anti-Semitism

LOS ANGELES (JTA) —
More than 3,000 people
gathered at the Simon Wie-
senthal Center for
Holocaust Studies at
Yeshiva University of Los
Angeles for a rally last week
against anti-Semitism and
bigotry.
Wiesenthal flew from his
home in Vienna to be the
featured speaker at the
rally.
The program also in-
cluded civic, religious and
community leaders who
participated in a cleansing
ceremony of the desecration
that occured at the center
earlier this month.

to the main winds, there are
secondary ones which can
be as much as 90 percent off
from the main winds.
Tsoar would welcome the
opportunity to do in-
terplanetary research once
again. But for now, he has
the satisfaction of sharing
his enthusiasm with Ben-
Gurion University students
next semester when he
teaches the first course ever
offered in Israel in planet-
ary geomorphology.
