Commission; Dr. Gideon
Hausner, prosecutor at
the Eichmann trial; and
French Nobel Prize win-
ner for medicine Prof.
Andrew Lwoff.
After hearing first-hand
accounts of Wallenberg's
wartime work, both from
his Swedish collaborators
and Jewish proteges, as well
as copious evidence about
Wallenberg's detention in
the Soviet Union, the con-
ferenOe unanimously re-
solved that it believed the
Swede was still alive.
It said it-would ask the
Soviet Union to receive a
delegation to discuss the
matter in Moscow and that
meanwhile the Wallenberg
Association would seek the
help of Western Communist
parties and international
human rights agencies.
But 24 hours after the
conference ended the Soviet
Embassy in Stockholm re-
fused to accept the resolu-
tion and would not let the
tribunal chairman, Swedish
Supreme Court Justice In-
grid Gaerde Widemar, past
the embassy gates in her bid
to see the Soviet ainbas-
sador.
The Swedish govern-
ment is making no secret
of its strong sympathy for
the conference. Ola
Ullsten, the foreign
minister, said Sweden
welcomed all efforts to
clarify Wallenberg's fate.
Although the Soviet gov-
ernment has declared
that Wallenberg died in
1947, he said, "The
Swedish government has
never accepted this as the
final answer."
The Wallenberg cam-
paign's international di-
mensions were underlined
by Saturday night's tor-
chlight demonstration out-
side the Soviet embassy in
London. Organized by the
British Wallenberg Com:-
mittee, of which Janner is
chairman together with MP
Winston S. Churchill, it at-
tracted nearly 500 people
and coincided with the 36th
anniversary of the arrest of
Wallenberg and his Jewish
driver, Wilmos Langfelder
whose subsequent fate also

remains unclear.
The London demon-
strators included members
of the Jewish community
and members of Christian
churches, including the
Swedish Lutheran Church
in London. Actors Pamela
Manson and Cyril Shaps
read extracts from letters by
Wallenberg to his mother,
and Jewish and Christian
clerky read Psalms.

In Stockholm, one of the
chief participants was Mrs.
Annette Lantos, wife of the
newly-elected Democratic
Congressman Thomas Lan-
tos, who has said that his
first piece of legislative
business will be to propose
that honorary American
citizenship be conferred on
Wallenberg, whose
Budapest mission was
undertaken at the behest of
the wartime Roosevelt Ad-
ministration. Wallenberg is
a 1935 graduate of the Uni-
versity of Michigan.
Both Mrs. Lantos and
her husband originate
from Hungary and were
saved by the protection

of the Swedes and the
Portuguese representa-
tives there.
Prior to the Stockholm
hearings the Soviet ambas-
sador to London, Viktor
Popov, refused to receive a
former British Foreign
Office minister )ho asked
to see him about the Wal-
lenberg case. An official
came to the gates of the em-
bassy to tell Conservative
Member of Fikrliament
Peter Thomas that the am-
bassador was "a very busy
man" and had no time to see
him.
The embassy also refused
to accept a petition bearing
nearly 15,000 signatures
asking Soviet President
Leonid Brezhnev to reopen
inquiries into the fate of
Wallenberg who, if alive,
would now be 68 years old.
However it did accept two
letters. One was addressed
to Brezhnev from the Wal-
lenberg Committee. The
other, addressed eto the
Soviet ambassador, was
from Lord Fenner Rockway,
a leading Socialist member
of Britain's Parliament.

Low Jewish Birthrate Hit
by Navon at WJC Plenary

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
President Yitzhak Navon
called on Jews throughout
the world to have more chil-
dren. He spoke at the
seventh plenary assembly
of the World Jewish Con-
gress which elected Edgar
Bronfman, of New York, as
•its president succeeding
Philip Klutznick.
Navon warned that world
Jewry was endangered by a
loW birthrate and assimila-
tion. He said that unless the
birthrate was increased
there would be less than
eight million Jews left in
the non-Communist world
by the end of the century.
Navon also urged the
WJC to "establish a
dialogue" with Islam in
order to foster better world
understanding between the
two religions.
The plenary assembly,
the WJC's first in six
years, brings together
some 500 Jewish leaders
from 60 countries, includ-
ing delegates- from Po-
land, Bulgaria, Yugos-
lavia, and Romania.
One issue that is expected
to be the focus of attention is
the rising anti-Semitism in
Europe, South American
and the United Sates.
Attention will also be
placed on relations with
Islam and Christianity, the
situation of Jews in the
Soviet Union and the Arab
countries, and the threat to
Jewish survival of inter-
marriage and assimilation.
Another speaker was
former U.S. Sen. Jacob
Javits (R-N.Y.) who urged
the Reagan Administration
to "resist the blandishments
of Western Europe" and
"remain constant to the
Camp David peace process
and the Israel-Egypt peace
treaty."
Javits decried Western
European "efforts__ to
bring about a Mideast

settlement that would
make Israel's security
heavily dependent on
guarantees from other
countries and that would
accept the ultimate estab-
lishment of a Palestinian
state on Israel's borders.
Short term gains and
fancied favors from Arab
oil exporters will turn
into long term disasters if
Camp David is derailed."
A highlight of the open-
ing ceremony at the
_Binyanei Ha'ooma Conven-
tion Hall was the presenta-
tion of an award from the
WJC to Zubin Mehta, the
long time musical director
of the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra, who is also direc-
tor of the New York
Philharmonic.
Mehta, a non-Jew born in
India, stressed the orchest-
ra's role as a goodwill emis-
sary on behalf of the Jewish
state.

Begin Cheers
U.S. Hostages

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Premier Menahem Begin on
Wednesday sent his hear-
tiest congratulations and
best wishes to the American
people at the release of the
52 Americans who were
held hostage for 444 days in
Iran.
He declared: "It was a
tragedy which lasted for
nearly 15 months. It was not
only a problem for the
American people, but in-
deed for all of us who believe
.in international law, the
sacredness of diplomatic
immunity, in human rights
and liberty.
"All of us where with the
American people during the
days and nights of their
pain and worry, and now,
thank God, they are again
free men."

Forbear to judge, for we
are sinners all.
