She is today the head of a special school for religious ► girls. Prof. Shalevi was born in Germany and edubated in I - and. She came to Israel F. , 949 as an educator. When her daughter finished primary school, Prof. Shalevi looked for a •- school for her that would combine the conservative religious education system with secular studies. She founded the Pelech school, a religious professional school for girls, headed by ▪ teachers Shalom and Pnina Rosenblith. In this school . religious and secular ' studies were taught, and the school was therefore . boycotted by the religious establishment. The Pelech Institute teaches girls about history, art, music and philosophy. In three years they have to finish a program called "Eshet Hayil" (the ideal woman) which comprises studies of home and sur- roundings, intimate rela- tions and relations between parents and children: "One has to find a synth- esis between what one wishes and what one has," Prof. Shalevi explains. A program called "The Society in Israel" comprises sub- jects which other schools teach as "Citizenship." The girls are active in social work, clubs for youth and tutoring in order to gain the feeling that the individual participates in social life and is educated for democ- •racy. Pupils take active roles in their school, making deci- sions, participating in pKo- grams and projects. The students' "General Assem- bly" meets once a month and every pupil can propose any matter. The approach in the school to the pupils is personal. A few years ago some pupils wished to continue their studies at the Technion in Haifa. As the standards of Techn- ion are high, the Pelech Institute carried out a special teaching program for these pupils. All of the girls passed Technion's entrance exam. Prof. Shalevi also re- formed the mobilization Prof. Shalevi is deeply religious and has a broad system for pupils of her education. She is very school. She insists that all active in Israeli life. "But religious per- sonalities with a modern view like Prof. Urbach in Jerusalem and others started to send their daughters to this special school." Shalom and Pnina Rosenblith invested in their school all their indemnity money which they received from Germany. They worked voluntarily in a va- cated building in the former no-man's-land between Old and New Jerusalem. After the Six-Day War in 1967 they were given the build- ing by the Ministry for Reli- gious Affairs. Six years ago the couple decided to close the building because of financial prob- lems. They appealed to sev- eral institutions to help them. Prof. Shalevi de- clared her readiness to take over management of the Pelech school. She ap- pointed; a kibutz member, David Fuhr, as chairman of the institution, which was reformed completely. Pelech school adopted new education plans and programs. A new teaching system was introduced. The plans were approved by the director general of the Ministry for Education. - BURGLAR ALARMS ALLSTATE ALARM SYSTEMS NEW COMPUTERIZED SECURITY EQUIPMENT 1 NC • Central Station Monitoring Thousands of satisfied customers CALL THE r • ROTT BROS MARTY CY SHEL LOU- 1540 17534 W. 7 MILE, DETROIT LICENSED BY MICH.
