Beth Abraham Hillel Moses' men's club will present a concert of operatic and liturgical music, featuring Cantor Louis Danto of Toronto, 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 in the sanctuary. Cantor Danto studied voice and cello at the Minsk Conservatory in Russia. He has appeared in recitals in New York's Town Hall and Carnegie Hall and he re- cords music here and in Is- rael. Cantor Danto will be ac- The Meyer and Nathan Fishman Family Foundation an- nounces five $1,000 awards to outstanding high school stu- dents from the 10th-12th grades in the Tri-County area of Greater Detroit who will spend the summer of 1981 in Israel. Applicants must be enrolled in a Jewish high school. They will be judged by academic achievement, leadership, and commu- nity service. Financial need will also be considered. These Israel awards are administered by the Jewish Educators Council of Metropolitan Detroit. Application forms are available from Jewish educators or the Council's Past- President, Dr. Gerald A. Cantor David Bagley of Toronto's Beth Shalom Synagogue will appear in concert 8:30 p.m. Jan. 31 at Cong. Beth Achim. Born in Vilna, Cantor Bagley and his family fled to Japan and Shanghai, where he studied at the Mir Yeshiva. Coming to the U.S. in 1947, Cantor B iagley was affiliated with synagogues in Indiana, Chicago and De- troit. The Nidchei Israel Ashkenazi Congregation of Mexico offered Cantor Bag- ley the position of perma- nent cantor of the city. After the Six-Day War, he- emigrated to Israel, where he was appointed cantor of the Great Synagogue of Ramat- Gan. He also joined the Israel Air Force. During his stay in Israel — a period of three years — Bagley appeared in con- certs, on radio and televi- sion programs. Many of these appearances were for the benefit of troops and the wounded in hos- pitals, and for the Beit Halohem Rehabilitation Center. CANTOR BAGLEY The next eight years were spent in South Africa, at the Oxford Synagogue in Johannesburg and Clarem- ont Synagogue in Cape Town. Cantor Bagley was trained by late Cantor Yehoshuah Lind, of the Chicago Conservatory of Music, Avery Crew of De- troit and Arnold Fulton of Johannesburg.
