THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Rosen Reports on Romania Jews NEW YORK (JTA) — During 1980, 1,084 Roma- nian Jews went on aliya to Israel and presently there are 509 Jews in Romania who are waiting to receive exit visas to Israel, accord- ing to Romania's Chief Rabbi Moses Rosen. Addressing a recent press conference at the Joint Dis- tribution Committee's headquarters, Rosen said that an exit visa's applica- tion takes between four to eight months until it is ap- roved, which is "a short ,Jeriod" in terms of Corn- munist countries' bureauc- ratic procedures. Rosen added that any Romanian Jew who desires to go on aliya is free to do so without fear of harassment or the threat of being fired once the intention to emigrate is declared. Rosen; who was in New York to discuss the JDC's 1981 aid for Romania, de- scribed the 35,000-member Romanian Jewish commu- nity as a minority that enjoys full . religious, cul- tural and social freedom. "We are free to state our love for Jerusalem and proclaim that we are part of the Jewish people," Rosen said. He Code-Breaking Couple Played Key WWII Role NEW YORK — The death of Elizabeth Smith Fried- man last Oct. 31, served as a reminder of her important role during World War II. A story in Parade Maga- zine (Dec. 28) tells how Mrs. Friedman, a cryptanalyst for the Navy, was credited with breaking the Japanese "Doll Woman Code" in 1944 which solved espionage mysteries concerning dis- position of Allied warships. Her husband, Lt. Col. William Friedman, who died in 1969, was the chief of the army's cryptanalysis bureau during the war and was responsible for break- ing Japan's infamous "Pur- ple Code," which led to the American victory at the Battle of Midway. Following the war, endeavors by the couple in- cluded collaboration on a book, "The Shakespearean Ciphers Examined," which proved by cryptanalysis thatit was indeed Shakes- peare, and not Francis Ba- on, who wrote the works attributed to Shakespeare. added, however, "At the same time we are devoted citizens of Romania" and "we have to be loyal to the government." He said that "a climate of confi- dence" exists between the Jews of Romania and the government. In reply to a question cit- ing recent reports of an anti-Semitic article in one of Romania's newspapers, Rosen confirmed that last Sept. 5 an anti-Semitic arti- cle was published in the Bucharest weekly, "Sep- temena" (The Week), by an unidentified author. Rosen said that anti-Semitic arti- cles have been rare in the Romanian press in the last 30 years and that the article in September was an "ex- ception." Turning to the issue of Jewish life in Romania, Rosen warned that Roma- nian Jewry is facing "a leadership crisis." He noted that half of the members of the Jewish population in Romania are over the age of 65. According to Rosen, there are presently 61 function- ing synagogues out of 120 synagogues in the country, and 24 Talmud Torah schools. "We do everything we can to maintain Judaism," Rosen declared, stressing that "there is a danger" to the continuation of Judaism in Romania. Ralph Goldman, execu- tive vice president of the JDC, said his organization's budget for Romania in 1981 will amount to $3,808,000. He said that JDC programs provide as stance for the many Jewish aged in Romania and inclu,de cash relief, winter relief, clo- thing distribution, 'food packages, health services and Passover supplies. • PORTABLES • EXECUTIVE CHAIRS • • • $6996 • EXECUTIVE DESKS ..$99.50 • DESK LAMPS ...$49.95 We Got 'Em! 349.96 • CHECKWRITERS $49.96 • FILES • COPIERS $50 GIFTS $99.96 • SOFAS With purchase of reconditioned & guaranteed electric typewriters .$239.96 $199.95 & up Luggage, Parsons Tables, Briefcases, etc. BETTER BUSINESS EQUIPMENT CO. 231 W. 9 Mlle Rd. 1/4 blk. Desnick, chief of the genetics division at Manhattan's Mount Sinai Medical Center, is currently in charge of an effort to con- trol Gaucher's disease, an incurable hereditary illness that strikes approximately one of every 2,500 Jews born in America. Similar to other genetic diseases such as Tay-Sachs, which kills in infancy, Gaucher's is a deadly reces- sive gene disorder that has been found to afflict primar- ily Jews of European ethnic origin.
