Another Soviet Jew Goes on Trial

NEW YORK (JTA) —
The trial of long-time refus-
nik Alexander Magidovich
began last week in Tula, it
was reported by the Student
Struggle for Soviet Jewry
and the Union of Councils
for Soviet Jews.
His friends have not been
able to find out what official
charges were lodged against
the 49-year-old electrical
engineer, but they have
learned that all evidence is
verbal.
According to the two
Qnviet Jewry groups, the
)secution has alleged that
iviagidovich, who first
applied for an exit visa eight
years ago, criticized the
Soviet authorities for exil-
ing Nobel Peace Prize win-
ner Andrei Sakharov, that
he admired bourgeois
democracies and their con-
stitutions as more demo-
cratic than the Soviet -
Union's, and that he ex-
pressed dissatisfaction at
not being able to emigrate.
Magidovich had been
interrogated by the KGB
in 1977 in connection
with the trial against
Anatoly Shcharansky. In
February 1980, secret
police searched his
apartment and the fol-
lowing month he was for-
cibly placed for several
months in the notorious

stitute, the two Soviet
Jewry groups reported.
Meanwhile, Soviet
Jewish prisoner of con-
science losif Mendelevich is
in his third month of a
hunger strike in the Perm
labor camp.
The 33-year-old Orthodox
Jew is the only remaining
Jewish prisoner from the
1970 Leningrad trial of a
group that planned to steal
a Soviet plane to fly to free-
dom.
He began his hunger
strike to demand that his
religious books and ritual
articles confiscated by camp
authorities be restored and
that he be allowed to ob-
serve the Sabbath.
Moscow Jewish activists
reported that Mendelevich
was force-fed after fasting
for two weeks and that camp
officials had planned to re-
peat the- action every 10
days.
In Winnipeg, the Uk-
rainian Canadian Com-
mittee's executive board
has adopted a resolution
condemning the planned
publication in the Uk-
raine of "Judaism and
Zionism — Adherents of
Racism" by Trofym
Kichko, known for a
previous anti-Semitic
work.
The committee noted that
Kichko was the author of
the infamous book,
"Judaism Without Embel-
lishment," which, when it
was published by the Uk-
rainian Academy of Sci-
ences in 1963, was said to
contain "traditional Ukrai-
nian anti-Semitism" and
caused a great deal of ac-
rimony and misunderstand,
ing which damaged Ukrai-
nian communities through-
out the world.
The Ukrainian Canadian
Committee charged that the
planned publication of

nian communities in
Canada and elsewhere.
In a related development,
a Soviet Jewish refusnik
who struggled for eight
years to obtain an exit visa
from the Soviet Union has
arrived in Israel.
Lev Roitbard, a 44-
year-old aviation
engineer, was the last of
the 18 refusniks who ap-
peared on Sen. Edward
Kennedy's 1978 list sub-
mitted to Soviet
President Leonid
Brezhnev to be allowed
out of the USSR.
It also was learned that

Sciences Research, it was
announced by the Commit-
tee of Concerned Scientists
in New York.
The invitation was of-
fered on the ninth anniver-

application to emigrate
from the Soviet Union by

Gaza Attacks
Kill 1, Injure 3

TEL AVIV (JTA) — A
taxi driver from Rehovot
was shot and killed when he
took his cab for repair in a
garage in the Gaza Strip
Sunday.
Yehezkel Mizrachi, 29,
had just entered a repair
shop in the Jebaliya refugee
camp on the outskirts of
Gaza when shots were fired
at him from short range,
apparently from a pistol,
army sources said. He died
instantly. The army im-
posed a curfew on the camp
area and searches were car-
ried out.
Israeli drivers frequently
use repair shops and gar-
ages in the West Bank and
Gaza Strip, where prices are
lower than in Israel.
In another incident, three
members of the Golan fam-
ily from a village near Had-
era were injured in a gre-
nade attack on their car as it
was passing through the
Gaza Strip.
This attack was the first
on Jewish travellers in the
area for some months,
though about a dozen local
Arab residents have been
killed in what officials be-
lieve was political action
against people accused of
collaborating with the Is-
raeli authorities or charged ,
by religious extremists with
operating bars and trading
in drugs.
