The Best of Everything

THIS PAST Hanuka
was sort of a special time for
Wendy and Terry Brown .. .
They celebrated their first
wedding anniversary .. .
But Terry's talents, Wendy
discovered, went beyond
that of being a good, solid
husband . . . He is also quite
a man about the kitchen .. .
especially when it comes to
making potato pancakes.
Jack and Judy Nolish
were to hold their 10th an-
nual latke party . . . but it
was postponed by their
adoption of a baby . . . Terry
and the Nolishes are close
friends and he has been the
latke chef supreme since
the event's inception.
Family and friends are
invited . . . and the list has
grown from about two dozen
people in the beginning .. .
to about 300 in Decembers
past.
The batter for the lat-
kes is made to Terry's
specifications ... origi-
nally blended by hand .. .
but the job now sped up
by food processors ...
Terry begins cooking
early in the morning and
continues through the
day to keep hungry
guests satisfied ... The
required sour cream and
applesauce are available
. and as usual, Jack
Nolish brews up his
famous punch.
It is estimated that Terry
has flipped over 4,000 pan-
cakes . . . He keeps eight
frying pans going with a
maze of electrical cords set
up to prevent- a fuse blow-
out . . . Planning for the
event begins two months in
advance.
The date has been set for
"Hanuka In April" . . . April
5 . . . as Latke 10 that had
been postponed . . . with ex-
pectations to go through 140
lbs. of potatoes, 20 lbs. of on-
ions, 50 lbs. of applesauce,
18 lbs. of Crisco, 64 lbs. of

matzo meal, 10 dozen eggs,
21 lbs. of sour cream, six
gallons of sherbert, 46 liters
of Vernors, 18 liters of wine,
12 gallons of orange juice
and one-fifth of Wild Tur-
key bourbon (for the chef).
Terry and Wendy (she's
Wendy Robins, Emmy win-
ner while with TV 2 and
now with WXYZ) are look-
ing forward to the April 5
latke party . . . but more so
to a date in August .
That's when this fine couple
expect to become parents.
YES, IT'S TRUE . . .
that the Scotch 'n Sirloin
name may soon rise again
. . . at the same site of the
former S & S on Greenfield
and Northwestern .
That's where Fogo's took
over the closed operation
and eventually locked its
doors also.
When the Fogo family
bought the building and
land, name Scotch 'n Sirloin
went with purchase .. .
They mistakenly preferred
their own monicker and
spent a boodle changing it
over . . . However, nothing
helped . . . or could.
Now again comes the
time-honored name . . . But
that will be the only re-
semblance between the old
and the new.
PEOPLE
MANY
HAVE taken advantage of
the culinary expertise of
Chef Ramy Berdy at Michi-
gan Inn on J.L. Husdon
Drive . . . whose French and
continental cuisine are
marks of elegance . . . espe-
cially in the realm of Jewish
cooking, which he loves.
With notice, Ramy will
prepare for you, your
friends or family, a tradi-
tional Jewish meal . . . from
gefilte fish to tzimmes.
Ramy and wife Karen
keep a kosher home . . . He
was born in Cyprus and was
an Israeli soldier during the
Six-Day War . . . stationed
on the Golan Heights.
SYLVIA WEITZMAN
never baked for her children
. . . never knew how, al-
though she loved to cook .. .
and didn't even work a day
in her life ... All that
changed, however, when
daughters Beverly Ersher
(Ed) and Marlene Elias
(Hanley) opened Sneaky
Treats on Southfield and
12 1/2 Mile in the Farrell's
Shopping Plaza.
She immediately wanted
to be a part of their opera-
tion as much as possible .. .
loves it . . . and is there four
or five days a week now .. .
Sylvia taught Beverly and
Marlene how to cook years
ago ... and they have
shown her how to bake
those delicious sugar-free
and salt-free cakes and
cookies . . . Her specialties
are the yummy streudel and
crunch roll cookies.
MESSAGE FOR MANY
restaurants . . . Get smart
. . . Only way to make any
money these days is by vol-
ume . . . Go for this with
lower prices instead of keep-
ing people away or making
them go elsewhere . . . If you
don't, and are content with a

U.S. Studying 'Israeli Mafia'

is composed of ex-convicts
and former commandos who
began as black marketeers
in Bat Yam, Israel. It says
the gang began in the U.S.
by extorting "protection"
money from Jewish mer-
chants in Los Angeles,
graduated to insurance
fraud and is now involved in
murder and narcotics.
Newsweek quoted one in-
vestigator who said,
"They've managed in five
years what the Italians took
40 years to do."

WASHINGTON — An
article in the Jan. 5 News-
week magazine reports on
the Mafia in tha U.S. and
gives a broad overview of
organized crime.
A section of the report
deals with the "Israeli
Mafia," a group of Israelis
who have entered the U.S.
legally and illegally and
built up a mob organization
in Los Angeles during the
last five years. A grand jury
is now studying tl..e group.
Newsweek says the gang
