44. Actor Sam Levene Dies NEW YORK — Sam Levene, who created the character Nathan Detroit in the musical "Guys and Dolls," died last weekend at age 75. Mr. Levene was best known for his portrayal of Damon Runyon characters. He performed in Detroit at the Fisher Theater in var- ious plays over the years as well as the old Northland Playhouse. Born in Russia, Mr. Levene came to the U.S. at 9 and grew up on New 's lower east side. Mr. Le vene said he first enrolled in a drama school to remove the traces of his Yiddish ac- cent. He appeared in more than 100 movies and Broadway plays, begin- ning with a five-line part in 1927 in "Wall Street." His recent films included "And Justice for All," "The Last Embrace" and "The Champ." Jay B. Alvin ' Jay B. Alvin, a painting contractor for 35 years, died Dec. 24 at age 85. Born in Marion, Mich., Mr. Alvin was the former owner of H. T. Sloman Co. He was the painting con- tractor for the Fisher Build- ing and General Motors New Center Building. He served in the ambulance corps-Harper Hospital Unit during World War II in Di- jon, France. Mr. Alvin was a member of Temple Beth El. He leaves his wife, Anne; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Phyllis) Welling and Mrs. Sumner (Marilyn) Willens of Swampscott, Mass.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Mandelstam's Widow Dies NEW YORK Nadezhda Mandelstam, widow of the poet Osip Mandelstam, died Monday at age 81. She collected and preserved the works of her husband, who died in 1938 in a concentration camp, so that one day they could be released for public con- sumption. Mrs. Mandelstam spent most of her youth in Kiev and studied art and Euro- pean languages. Born into a Jewish fam- ily, Mrs. Mandelstam said she had been a practicing R tan Orthodox believer a it her entire life. Dora Saulles Dora Saulles, a foster grandmother at the Plymouth State Home for retarded children, died Dec. 27 at age 82. Born in Russia, Mrs. Saulles lived 59 years in De- troit. She is survived by two sons, Charles and Norman; three daughters, Mrs. Max (Beatrice) Pleasant of Scottsdale, Ariz., Mrs. Lawrence (Rae) Cohen and Irene Carter; a brother, Morris Fisher of Northville; 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. The son of a cantor, Mr. Levene changed the spel- ling of the family name from Levine to Levene because another actor in Actors Equity was using the name Sam Levine at the time. Mr. Levene became a star in 1935 when he created the part of Patsy in "Three Men on a Horse" — a role he con- tinued to recreate for three decades. Among the productions in which he appeared are: "Horowitz and Mrs. Wash- ington," "Dinner at Eight," "Light Up the Sky," "The Sunshine Boys," "Room Service," "The Devil's Ad- vocate," "The Match- maker," "The Royal Fam- ily" and "The Merchant."
