buildings and the begin-
nings of fields developed
by the military after the
Six-Day War, and turned
them into a growing civi-
lian settlement.
Today, they have young
strong orchards, although
the trees are still a few
years away from bearing a
sizeable fruit crop. They are
harvesting tomatoes, flow-
ers and a wide variety of
vegetables. They built a
dining hall, added a com-
munity center and even
started construction on a
school building, looking
toward the day when there
would be school-age chil-
dren on the kibutz. Now
they will have to leave.
The government of Israel
and the Jewish Agency
have promised the members ,
of Kibutz Sufa that they will
receive new facilities, but
there is no way to compen-
sate them for the years of
work that they haYe in-
vested.
The 1979 Jewish Agency
budget projection called for
the start of construction on
the new kibutz in early
1980. However, a serious
shortfall in expected income
and an uneven cash flow
from the United Jewish Ap-
peal and Keren Hayesod
campaigns forced the
agency to abandon its proj-
ections, and slash budgets
for 1980-1982. One of the
projects delayed was the
new Kibutz Sufa.

Rabbi Irving Miller, a

mere, Long Island, at age
77.
In addition to his role in
the Zionist movement,
Rabbi Miller also played a
leading role in discussing
Jewish postwar problems
with representatives of the
Allied governments in Lon-
don in 1943.
In 1942, Rabbi Miller was
elected chairman of the
executive committee of the
American Jewish Congress.
He also served as president
of the Zionist Organization
of America from 1952 to
1954.
