You believe easily what
you hope for earnestly.
Danny Raskin's
LISTENING
POST
WHAT A GREAT New
Year's Eve celebration . . .
not to mention a very won-
derful holiday gift ... for
Irene and Seymour Burg .. .
when their 25-year-old son,
Lt. Steven Burg, came home
to spend a couple of weeks
with them . . . He is
stationed at the naval sta-
tion at Pearl Harbor.
They hadn't seen him in
eight months . . . but that
isn't the biggest reason ..
Steve had spent almost a
year in a military hospital
near Pearl Harbor hovering
between yes and no on hav-
ing a leg amputated . . . His
car had stalled and while
putting out a road flare,
Steve was struck by a drunk
driver . . . He limps some-
what but walks without
crutches or a brace . . .
There could be no better
1980 present for Irene and
Seymour.
REX BOYS. . . AZA
BBYO and Bnai Brith
Lodge . . . will finally have
their reunion . . . It's set for
7 p.m. Thursday at the Fair-
lane Club in Dearborn .. .
Reservations are not neces-
sary . . . It you're a former
Rex-ite, plan to attend for a
lot of reminiscing fun .. .
Gents only . . . For more
info, call Joe ; Silberschein,
875-2670.
Calling Sanford Walkon
. . . Remember back in 1951
when as a, 15-year-old
member of Rex 309, BBYO,
you accomplished what very
few bowlers manage to do in
a lifetime, roll a 300 game?
You carried a 148 average
in a junior boys league and
rolled your perfect game
during open bowling with
Austin Herschorm at Var-
sity Recreation . . . A tenth
grade student at Mumford
High, you had been bowling
only two years.
BIRTHDAY CON-
GRATS . . . to Jennie
Light.
JUDGE NORMAN
FEDER of the 46th District
Court in Southfield has
been elected president of the
Oakland Country District
Judges Association . . .
Judge Benjamin Friedman
of the District Court in Oak
Park was named secretary-
treasurer . . . Of the 32 dis-
trict judges in Oakland
County, only four are
Jewish . . . Feder, Fried-
man, Marvin Frankel and
Jessica Cooper.
SOL LEWIS describes
the first time he met his
wife Elaine (Brod) . . .
"What a moment! I heard a
buzzing in my ears, bells
sounded, and lights flashed.
You know what that
means?" . . . "I sure do," an-
swered Elaine. "You must
have been leaning against a
pinball machine."
Seven-hour workshop at
Hamilton Place on South-
field Rd. is set for Jan. 17, 9
to 5 . . . by Michigan
Metaphysical Society . . .
with director Sol leading
the meditation session for
increasing a person's
awareness . . . He has the
ability to relax at will and
show others how they can
also.
PHYLLIS
TYNER
overheard this one at
Applegate Square, North-
western and Inkster Rd.
. . . Youngster asking
Santa Claus if he knew
when Hanuka was over.
MODESTY OF A SORT
. . . Donny Klein, 5-year-
old son of Alex and Rose
Klein, is attending school
this year for the first time
. . . Last week, Alex in-
quired how he liked his new
teacher . . . "Alright,"
Donny replied . . . Alex teas-
ingly asked if his teacher
was smart . . . "Well," ad-
mitted little Donny , " she
knows more than I do."
CALLING JUDGE
NATE KAUFMAN . . .
Remember back in 1956
when Judge John Watts
took ill and it was only as a
temporary replacement
that put you on the local
television screens? . . . You
used "Juvenile Court" in-
stead and came up with a
TV sensation acco!ding to
Mr. and Mrs. Public . . .
Judge Watts returned to
the "Traffic Court" pro-
gram, but the demand was
so great that "Juvenile
Court" continued be be
every Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
over then WWJ-TV, Chan-
nel 4 . . . Nate, you had a
fantastic TV rating of 28.4
. . larger than that of any-
body including the popular
Ed Sullivan, who was tops
at the time.
LOOKING BACK On
Columns of Yesteryears .. .
DEC. 19, 1969 .. ."Henry
Kales had been to a party
the evening before . . . He
awoke with an oversized
head and knew he was in no
condition for work . . . Cal-
ling his scrap metal part-
ner, Sid Wise, he said the
party had been too much for
him and he wouldn't be able
to get to the office that day.
" 'Well, take it easy and
relax," replied Sid, "but you
didn't have to bother to call
— this is Sunday!"
"While in town recently,
Bess Nader, ex-Detroiter
teaching elementary school
in Des Moines, Iowa, told
about having her class write
a homework composition ti-
tled, "My Dog' . . ."
After reading all the
comps, she called one boy
and said, 'Your composition
is the same as your brother's
— word for word' . . . And
the boy answered, 'Why
not? It's the same dog.' "
