Golan Bill Has Noisy Death

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
The Likud coalition easily
survived another par-
liamentary challenge last
week. A motion of no-
confidence submitted by the
Tehiya faction following the
Cabinet decision not to sup-
port the Golan annexation
bill was supported by only
two Tehiya Knesseters.
Fifty-six coalition Knesset-
ers voted against. Forty-two
opposition Knesseters
abstained.
The time is not ripe to

take such a step," said
Minister Moshe Nissim as
he asked the Knesset to
waive the motion. "The bill
would have caused more
damage than good," he
warned.
Alignment Knesseter
Abba Eban explained why
the Labor Party would not
vote against the govern-
ment this time. "Whatever
our general attitude to the
government should be,"
said Eban, "under no cir-
cumstances would the
Alignment faction give the
slightest support for a mo-
tion of no confidence in this
specific context." Eban said
that the Alignment did not
need to listen to any preach-
ing from the Tehiya move-
ment regarding the security
and settlement value in the
Golan Heights. "The de-
fense system in the Golan
was not erected under the
leadership of the Tehiya."
Eban gave a dovish
speech which implied
that in the Golan Israel
should maintain open op-
tions. His speech pro-
voked the anger of the
hawkish wing of the
Labor Party and the
Alignment faction was
called into an urgent
meeting.
Sharp exchanges were
made between doves and
hawks, reaching a climax
with a confrontation be-
tween hawkish Amos
Hadar and dovish Yossi
Sarid. The faction eventu-
ally stuck to its previous de-
cision to abstain in the vote.

Mild Criticism
for PLO Attack

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
The Palestine Liberation
Organization's attack with
Soviet weapons, on ele-
ments of the United Nations
Interim Force in Lebanon
(UNIFIL), was mildly
criticized by the State De-
partment which had taken a
harsh line against the
Christian forces in south
Lebanon last summer for
firing on UN troops.
Asked to comment, the
department's chief spokes-
man, John Trattner, re-
plied, "We don't like inter-
ference, much less firing, on
UNIFIL." James Holger,
political adviser to UNIFIL
Commander Lt. Gen.
Emanuel Erskine, said the
PLO fired 46 rounds, in-
cludign 26 Soviet-made
Katyusha rocket shells, at
Norwegian and Ghanaian
UNIFIL battalions in south
Lebanon.
He said there were no
casualties and that the UN-
IFIL command had pro-
tested to PLO headquarters
in Beirut.

Extremists Hit

TEL AVIV (ZINS) — Dr.
S. Z. Abramov has written
an article in Haaretz that is
critical of ultra-Orthodox
extremists in Israel.
He was particularly criti-
cal of the Jerusalem Chief
Rabbinate for its statement
prohibiting participation in
services conducted by the
Conservative movement.

American people who have
stood by us during this try-
ing ordeal. There is no way
that I can express my
gratitude and love for all
the generosity the people
have shown us."

NEW YORK — Among
the 52 American hostages
being held in Iran is Barry
Rosen of Brooklyn, N.Y., a
public relations specialist at
the embassy.

During his film seg-

although I can't be with
you this holiday season
I'm with you spiritually.
To my dear mother I want
you to know that my
