Shaarey Zedek will inaugurate its Tillie Martin Memorial Lecture Series, named for the late chair- man of its cultural commis- sion, 8 p.m Jan. 13 at the synagogue. Guest speaker at the in- augural lecture will be Dr. Cyrus Gordon, who holds the chair in Hebraic studies at New York University. His topic will be "Jewish Women in History." Dr. Gordon composed and published the first com- prehensive grammar, dic- tionary, text edition and translation of the Ugaritic tablets that revolutionized Old Testament studies. He was elected an hon- orary fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society in 1975 and is the recipient of numerous honors, awards and fellowships. A native of Philadelphia, Dr. Gordon earned BA, MA and PhD degrees at the University of Pennsyl- vania. He has been an instructor of Hebrew and Assyrian at the U-P and a field ar- cheologist in the American Schools of Oriental Re- search in Jerusalem and Baghdad.
