U-M Hillel Plans Services and Events

Conservative services are
held at 5:30 p.m. each Fri-
day. The Orthodox minyan
will meet 5 p.m. Jan. 9, 5:15
p.m. Jan. 16 and Jan. 23,
and 5:30 p.m. Jan. 30. Re-
form services will be at 7:15
p.m. Jan. 16 and 7:30 p.m.
Jan. 30. In addition, the
traditional minyan meets
9:30 a.m. each Saturday.
At 8 p.m. Thursday,
Hillel will sponsor a "wel-
come back" coffee house
with food and entertain-
ment.

The Bnai Brith Hillel
Foundation at The Univer-
sity of Michigan holds reg-
ular Shabat services each

University will conduct a
colloquium at 2009
Angell Hall at 4 p.m. Jan.
21 on "The Ancient
Jewish City and the
Polis," co-sponsored by
Hillel, the Classics De-
partment, the Program
on Judaic Studies and
the Program on Studies
in Religion. A reception
will follow the lecture.
At 8 p.m. that evening,
Prof. Gafni will speak at the
Hillel Foundation on "The
Significance of the Bar
Kochba War and Archeolog-
ical Discoveries for Jewish
History."
Prof. Yigal Shiloh of the
Hebrew University de-
partment of archeology will
speak at Hillel on "The City

The Union of Students for
Israel will distribute fruit in
the fishbowl of Haven Hall
on central campus and sell
trees to be planted in Israel

with Arthur Green from

Pennsylvania. Prof.
Green will speak on:
"Rabbi Nahman, the
Messiah and the Jewish
Question." After lunch at
Hillel on Jan. 17, Green
will lead a study session
on: "Tales of Rabbi
Nahman." At 7:30 p.m.

Registration for Beit
Midrash courses for the sec-
ond semester begins Jan.

12, with classes starting on
Jan. 19. These courses are
open to students and the
community, and a catalogue
is available at Hillel. The
courses offered this semes-
ter include Hebrew (three
levels), Yiddish (two levels),
basic Judaism, Talmud, The
48 Ways to Wisdom, and
Hebrew calligraphy.
The Kibutz Desk is open
each Thursday from 3 to 5
p.m. for information, and
the Aliya Desk will be open
Jan. 15 by appointment.
Hillel hosts Israeli folk
dancing each Sunday at
noon for beginners and at 1
p.m. for open dancing.
Kosher delis are featured at
6 p.m. Sundays at Hillel.
Hillel Hebrew Musi-
cians will meet 8 p.m.
Jan. 11 and 25 to play and
sing Israeli, Yiddish, folk
and liturgical music.
The campus United
Jewish Appeal Hatikva
Campaign will begin with a
free film, "The Mad Adven-
tures of Rabbi Jacob," 8 p.m.

be an open organizational
meeting for campaign vol-

penings on the Hill) is spon-
soring a home-made Shabat
dinner in Markley dormit-
ory Jan. 9. A Jewish
women's discussion group
for women in the Hill dorms
is being organized and will
meet in Markley at 8 p.m.
