JERUSALEM — "There is a close relationship be- ret. t" 66 tween our people and the $14.95 - 0 Jews," says 41-year-old - Japanese Zionist Sadao O'Hara, whose study of Judaism has led him, his 37-year-old wife and three children to decide to move to the settlement of Kedumim 1 — the first Japanese to set- tle in the West Bank. O'Hara, a computer printout paper manufac- turer, is a member of Ja- pan's 2,200-strong Bnei Shomron group, which ,.. claims a \close affinity with Jews. According to O'Hara, the automated paper plant will be run by five employees and will produce a half mil- lion dollars worth of paper a year for export to Japan and Europe as well as for sale in Israel. The Japanese Em- bassy, ,disturbed at such a large investment by one of its citizens in a West Bank settlement, called O'Hara at Kedumim to caution him. "They said, 'You in- vested all that money in the West Bank? What will happen to the money if the land is relinquished?' I told them, If it's time to lose my investment, no problem.' So, what they say doesn't bother me, because I love this coun- try." O'Hara — the spelling of his name came from an American occupation officer with a sense of humor in the days after World War II — will market the Kedumim products in Japan, where he owns a larger, 18-man com- puter paper plant. Kedumim and the Israel government have greeted O'Hara with open arms. The government has given him a large grant for the estab- lishment of his industry and SEWING MACHINE REPAIR $ d l i w± n it c h P lt ua h dr is t eS a sd.g. O'Hara already owns a home in Kfar Sava but will move - into a pre- fabricated concrete block home. The son of a Japanese general who was killed in action in World War II, O'Hara grew up on the Ryuku Island of Okinawa. His "quest for the truth" started when he was in high school. "I became seriously ill and one day my best friend, a Christian, came to visit. He brought me a copy of the Bible. He told me to read parts of it and then to pray. Two weeks later, I was healthy." O'Hara began studying Christianity and was on the point of converting "when it dawned on me that God promised everything to the Jews, that they were his chosen people." His introduction to Judaism came from Rabbi Abraham Avinea, who travels throughout Japan giving lessons in Hebrew and Judaism. After that first contact, O'Hara decided to join the Bnei Shomron group. Soon after, he visited Israel — and Kedumim: "At first I thought I could never live at Kedumim. But each time I came to Israel, I returned to the settlement and ap- preciated its beauty. Then I realized that Samaria be- longs to the Jewish people and not to any other coun- try." O'Hara is beginning to feel sufficiently comfort- able in Israel to point out what he sees as shortcomings in Israeli society. "All the ideas, arguments and discussions, the con- flicting ways Jews run their government and businesses — it bothers me," he said. "If the Jews followed one FRANK PAUL and His ORCHESTRA DUO's — TRIO's idea and acted upon it, they would be the strongest people on earth." What is that idea? O'Hara replies immediately: "Torah." S. Liberman. Liber- man was previously a vice president of the Jewish community of Tokyo. The former president, H. Eisenbaum is currently re- siding in Hong Kong. In 1977 there were 28 families, and 30 families in 1978. The' growing number of Jewish civilians in Taipei prompted the beginning of two Sunday school classes; each Tuesday there, are or- ganized social and cultural activities. Nearly 180 Jews attended the 1980 com- munal Seder. The Jewish Commu- nity Center in Taipei houses a synagogue, a large function hall, a smaller hall, kitchen and two classrooms. The recreational areas have a pool table, table tennis, billiards, as well as a large swimming pool. Two full-time employees maintain the property. Unfortunately, the five- year-old Taipei Jewish community is totally tran- sient in that all Jews repre- sent major Israeli or West- ern export-import businesses and are simply serving a short term in Taiwan. Treasurer of the commu- nity is Richard Chitayat who represents Zim Lines. The social director is Nahum Dishon who repre- sents the Israeli electronics firm, TADIRAN. Each Jewish member pays $30 monthly toward the maintenance of the Jewish community center. Religious services are con- ducted in a Conservative I Ii TRANSMISSION I .
