The flower-growing in-
dustry in Israel is only
about a decade old — but
one in every three moshav
members now grows cut
flowers for export. About
6,000 families make their
living from these productive
enterprises.
The main flower crops are
roses, gladioli and carna-
tions — but others are
rapidly being added to the
"export menu," such as the
statice, a bh..e flower that
has become popular in
Europe, the gerbera and the
chrysanthemum.

The violent death of John
Lennon stunned his many
fans in Israel who, together
with millions of other
youngsters around the
world, grew up with Len-
non's and the Beatles' songs
and music.
But while it is true that
Lennon and his music
helped to shape a profile of a
generation in America,
Britain and a few other
Western countries, it was
not the case with Israelis
who became young men and
women during the 1960s
and 1970s.
The Beatles and their
songs, however, were a very
important part of life in Is-
rael during those years.
Their lyrics were translated
into Hebrew and their songs
were constantly on the top
of the Israeli charts.
Despite the popularity
of the Beatles among
young Israelis, the Bea-
tles were not permitted to
appear in Israel during
the late 1960s because of
an Education Ministry
decree. The Beatles
might have had a bad
influence on Israeli
youth, the Education
Ministry said then in an
effort to justify its foolish
decision.
Israeli movie director
Asaf Dayan, son of Moshe
Dayan, met recently in
London with American mo-
tion picture star Barbra
Streisand to discuss the pos-
sibility of their , acting to-
gether in the movie version
of Isaac Bashevis Singer's
story, "Yentel," Dayan dis-
closed in an interview in Is-
rael.
According to Dayan, this
will be the first movie to be
directed by Streisand, who
is considering him for the
part of Avigdor while she
will play Yentel.
Dayan is presently finish-
ing the editing of a new film,
his seventh, which was shot
in part in Eilat. The name of
the new film is "Am Yisrael
Chai" ("The People of Israel
Live").
A number of Yiddish
films, mostly from before
World War II, are being
shown in The Nether-
.

Israeli Fans Mourn Beatle
are shipped abroad an-
nually by jet from Agrexco
to their destinations in
Europe, the east coast of
America and even Japan,
which is a growing market
for Israeli agricultural
products. In America,
synagogues have organized
a scheme whereby Jews buy
Israeli flowers for the festi-
vals, which leads to sales of
thousands of blooms.
But this growing indus-
try did not come into its
own without a great deal
of research. Much of this
took place at the Hebrew
University's department
of ornamental horticul-
ture in Rehovot. Here
seemingly abstruse sci-
entific research is made
on all aspects of flower
growing — 'studies of
petal cells, methods of
separating cell walls
from the membrane, and
techniques formerly used
on blood cells applied to
roses, to study the effects
of aging on flowers and to
discover whether this is
controlled by hormones.
At the university, flowers
that formerly bloomed in'
spring and summer were
induced - to bloom in the
winter, at the right time for
selling them in Britain and
Europe, when it is too cold
for local flower growing.
This particular experiment
was made with the statice.
It was, in effect, put to sleep
and allowed to wake up
when winter came.
Research was done on
shipping the flowers at the
right humidity and tern-
perature so that they would
arrive fresh on the market
in their country of destina-
tion. This involved new
methods of freight, ship-
ping, and even new mate-
rials for packing that were
evolved by Israel's plastic
factories.
Israel also evolved new
methods of building
greenhouses for flower
growing and also for other
crops. The "Q" company in
Tel Aviv developed a
polycarbonate material,
Qualex, a form of translu-
cent,. unbreakable plastic
sheeting that is now used
for building greenhouses in
Holland, Britain, and of
course in Israel itself, where
it has proved popular in the
Negev settlements.
Experiments have also
been made at Ben-Gur-
ion University of the
Negev in geothermal
greenhouses, solar
greenhouses, and the
storage of the heat of the
sun for heating at night.
But all these far-reaching
developments do not mean
that everything has gone
smoothly in the flower in-
dustry. There is a conflict
between Agrexco, the ag-
ricultural exporting corn-
pany, and private flower
exporters. Agrexco claims
that the private exporters
are undercutting prices on
the European market and
wishes to have a law passed
in the Knesset limiting
flower exports to one body,
in the same way as all citrus
exports are made with the
Citrus Marketing Board.
Other problems are on
the horizon — Spain,
Greece and Portugal are
soon to become members
of the EEC and will be
able to sell their flowers
more cheaply than Israel,
who has to pay the high
tariff.
At a seminar in London,
Reuven Eiland, general
manager of Agrexco, spoke
of the importance of the
flower industry to farming
families and explained all
the effort, money and re-
search which had gone into
building up the infrastruc-
ture. He said that Israel's ef-
forts had actually helped
flower growing in Europe.
