Several members of the committee, including mem- bers of coalition parties, spoke against the bills, and parliamentary observers believe that the tide of majority opinion in the committee and in the house as a whole appears to be running against Golan an- nexation at this time. The idea of annexing the Golan by legislation was given a boost last week when it was pub- licly espoused at the first national convention of the United Kibutz Move- ment — the affiliation of Ihud• Hakibutzim and Hakibutz Hameuchad. The convention resolved to press within the oppo- sition Labor Party for ac- tion to pass such legisla- tion. There seems little doubt, however, that the large majority in Labor is against the annexation. Neverthe- less, some Israeli observers believe that Premier Begin might be tempted to let the bill progress through the Knesset with a view to em- barrassing Labor and show- ing up rifts between hawks and doves in the opposition. Others, however, feel that the premier, facing a near- crisis atmosphere within his government over eco- nomic policy, will not wish to stir up divisions within coalition ranks and will therefore allow the bill to die. Last week, Simone Veil, president of the European Parliament, warned Israel against the legislation be- cause it would damage Is- rael's ties with Europe. Israel Exports Up TEL AVIV (ZINS) — De- spite the loss of exports to Iran, which made up 10 per- cent of Israel's exports in 1978, Israel boosted exports 28 percent in 1979. The newspaper Haaretz reported that Israel ex- ported in 1979 some $1 bil- lion worth of polished diamonds and $600 million in agricultural products. Total Israel exports in 1979 hit $2.6 billion. The newspaper predicted that 1980 exports would be up 44 percent. Orientals Will Replace Jews in U.S. Music? NEW YORK (ZINS) — Leslie Rubinstein, in the New York Times, writes that Orientals are becoming increasingly active in the field of American music. He quoted conductor Jorge Mester of the Aspen Music Festival as saying, "The Israelis took over in the 1950s; now it's the Orientals." Violinist Yehudi Menu- hin said, "The Orientals are the Jews of the future. Costly Housing TEL AVIV (ZINS) — The newspaper Davaf reported that the cost of an inexpen- sive apartment in Israel went from seven years and seven months labor in 1978 to 81/2 years today. It said that more than 40,000 persons in Israel cannot find new housing, including 9 ; 000 newlyweds. Kosher Product Firms Urged to Benefit Jewish Education By BEN GALLOB (Copyright 1980, JTA, Inc.) A Queens rabbi has urged firms in the kosher products industry and other Jewish- related businesses to pro- vide direct financial support for institutions of Jewish education on all levels. The proposal was made by Rabbi Fabian Schonfeld of the Young Israel of Kew Gardens Hills at a session of the recent 82nd anniver- sary biennial convention in Boston of the Union of Or- thodox Jewish Congrega- tions of America. Decrying the "chronically low" salaries paid Jewish educators, which he said prevented many of the most qualified Jews from choos- ing Jewish teaching as a career, Rabbi Schonfeld also said numbers in some indi- cators of Jewish observance were declining, which he called an ominous sign. He urged the Orthodox organization to help or- ganize a campaign among Jewish business enterprises and to set a high priority on upgrading the level of Jewish education in the United States.
