Orthodox Halt Autonomy Move

JERUSALEM — A two-
week effort by an ultra-
Orthodox sect to establish
an autonomous, anti-
Zionist government in the
Mea Shearim quarter of
Jerusalem ended this week
when other ultra-Orthodox

groups in the area called the
municipality to resume
garbage pickups.
The service was halted
after stone-throwing Or-
thodox Jews attacked sani-
tation workers and burned
municipal trash bins.

The Neturei Karta sect
had protested the opening of
a new community center,
which they charged would
have a negative influence
on spiritual values. They
also protested the arrests of
35 members who had dis-
rupted an autopsy at
Hadassah Hospital.

After the Orthodox
groups asked the city to
resume garbage service,
astonished sanitation
workers were greeted by
an Orthodox delegation
which offered them
bread and salt, the tradi-
tional greeting for distin-
guished visitors, as well
as cake and wine.
A spokesman for "Auton-
omous Mea Shearim" said
that its independent gar-
bage service — two workers
and a wagon — had been
unable to begin collections
because of the weather.

A consciousness of inward
knowledge gives confidence
to the outward behavior,
which, of all things, is the
best to grace a man in his
carriage.
