Press was nominated by the academy's govern- ing council following a recommendation from a nominating committee chaired by Kenneth Pitzer of the University of California at Berkeley. The academy's member- ship will complete a mail vote by Jan. 15. A member of the academy since 1958, Press, at present is President Carter's science adviser and director of the U.S. Office of Science and Technology Policy. He was appointed in 1977 while serving as professor and chairman of the department of earth and planetary sci- ences at Massachusetts In- stitute of Technology. Trained at Columbia, Press taught at Columbia, California Institute of Technology and MIT. His federal government serv- ices included the Arms Con- trol and Disarmament Agency and the National Science Foundation and he participated in the bilateral science agreement with the Soviet Union in the years 1970-1976. He was a member for five years of the board of governors of the Weizmann Institute before resigning that and other private posts in 1977 upon becoming President Car- ter's adviser.
