National Academy of Sci-
ence's next president in suc-
cession to Philip Handler,
world reknowned
biochemist, who will leave
that office July 1 after hav-
ing served for 12 years, the
maximum permitted by the
academy's bylaws. Both are
New Yorkers and identified
with institutions in Israel.
The National Academy is
an organization of 1,324 sci-
entists and engineers "con-
cerned with the furtherance
of science and its use for
human welfare." Although
the academy is not a gov-

ing council following a
recommendation from a
nominating committee
chaired by Kenneth
Pitzer of the University of
California at Berkeley.
The academy's member-
ship will complete a mail
vote by Jan. 15.
A member of the academy
since 1958, Press, at present
is President Carter's science
adviser and director of the
U.S. Office of Science and
Technology Policy. He was
appointed in 1977 while
serving as professor and
chairman of the department

of earth and planetary sci-
ences at Massachusetts In-
stitute of Technology.
Trained at Columbia,
Press taught at Columbia,
California Institute of
Technology and MIT. His
federal government serv-
ices included the Arms Con-
trol and Disarmament
Agency and the National
Science Foundation and he
participated in the bilateral
science agreement with the
Soviet Union in the years
1970-1976. He was a
member for five years of the
board of governors of the
Weizmann Institute before
resigning that and other
private posts in 1977 upon
becoming President Car-
ter's adviser.

and the Soviet Union last
week called for a com-
prehensive Middle East set-
tlement based on the with-
drawal of Israeli forces from
all Arab territories.
The declaration was
made at the conclusion of a
three-day visit by Soviet
President Leonid Breshnev.
Both Breshnev and In-
dian Prime Minister Indira
Gandhi signed the 1,700
word statement.
