Jane Sherman Tells UIA of Project Renewal Progress

\
/—

A report was presented by
Detroiter Jane Sherman,
chairman of the Ad Hoc
Committee on Project Re-
newal of the United Israel
Appeal (UIA), at the UIA
annual meeting last week

at the Waldorf Astoria
Hotel.
"The accelerated pace of
Project Renewal is dramati-
cally demonstrated by three
pieces of statistical infor-
mation," Sherman's report
said. "In August of 1979,
approved allocations
amounted to only $323,000;
as of October 1980 it has
risen to over $34 million; in
August, 1979, allocations
for only four neighborhoods
had been approved; as of Oc-
tober 1980, allocation for 52

Israel Will Import Coal
From China to Replace Oil

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
An Energy Ministry expert
predicted that Israel will
import large quantities of
coal from the People's Re-
public of China within the
xt 10-15 years to replace
-ugh priced oil as its princi-
pal source of energy.
According to Eli Zohar,
two-way trade will develop
between the two countries.
Speaking at a scientific
convention at Kiryat
Anavim, Zohar said China
was a potential buyer of
phosphates, potash,
bromine compounds and
various industrial products
produced in Israel.
He said China intended
to increase its coal ex-
ports up to 15 million tons
this year. According to
Zohar, Poland is another
potential source of coal
for Israel.
Meanwhile, Israel will
embark on an effort to de-
velop new energy sources. It
was announced that three
major chemical companies
and the Haifa Refineries

have set up a new energy
firm for that purpose,
known as "Energy 2000."

It will concentrate on the
development of coal and
shale oil as alternative fuels
in cooperation with over-
seas firms. .

approved representing 534
separate projects," Sher-
man reported.
"In addition, over $2 mil-
lion has been approved for
national Project Renewal
programs."
Sherman noted that the
UIA is committed to
authorize Project Re-
newal allocations only
after six requirements
are met. They include
approval by local
neighborhood steering
committees in Israel;
consultation with local
federations in the U.S.;
approval by the Inter-
ministerial Committee,
the Jewish Agency
Treasury and the UIA in
Jerusalem; and "notifica-
tion of UJA and 'twinned'
federations."
"These careful proce-
dures, we hope, will provide
local communities with con-
fidence in the integrity of
their 'twinned' neighbor-

encourage the immediate
