JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Israel tends to be blase
about outpourings of sup-
port from visiting celeb-
rities. There are so many
celebrities — and their
enthusiasim so often seems
to wane once they leave the
country.
The visit here of Norwe-
gian film and stage star Liv
Ullman, which ended last
week, seems to have been a
notable exception. She cap-
tivated her audiences, and
the broader Israeli public,
with her emotional but ob-
viously sincere'professions
of deep identification with
the Jewish state.
Ullman came to Israel as
the guest of Hadassah, ac-
companied by the organiza-
tion's new president, Frieda
Lewis, to participate in
events commemorating the
120th anniversary of the
birth of Henrietta Szold,
founder of Hadassah.

Greece-Israel
Relations Urged

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir called on represen-
tatives of the European Par-
liament to "make the parli-
ament's voice heard" on the
question of Greece's dip-
lomatic relations with Is-
rael.
Greece, which is to enter
the „European Economic
Community (EEC) Jan. 1 as
a full member, does not
have full diplomatic rela-
tions with Israel, but only
relations at the ministerial
level. (This is one level
below that of full ambas-
sador and plenipotentiary.)
Israel has long pressed
the EEC governments to
demand of Greece that it
raise its ties with Israel to
full ambassadorial level —
in line with all the other
nine EEC states.
Now, Shamir expand.
that call to embrace th
European Parliament,
which sits in Strasbourg,
France, and which corn-
prises members of political
parties of all the EEC coun-
tries. Shamir told the par-
liamentarians that it was in
Israel's crucial interest to
maintain a close dialogue
with the EEC states-and to
expand friendship and
understanding with them.

Yiddish stories retain
their flavor and may have
become more popular than
ever: Even an old chestnut
related in Yiddish fashion is
sure to draw a laugh.
What is labeled "The Last
Official Jewish Joke Book"
(Bantam) may be old stuff
for many. Yet, there is al-
ways an available audience
for a book of this nature.
The book, authored by
humorist Larry Wilde, is
divided into eight chap-
ters ranging from "Kib-
bitzers, Kvetches and
Klutzes," to "Jewish
Polish Jokes." It contains
177 pages of jokes, anec-
dotes and riddles.
Wilde is a native of New
Jersey and a veteran comic
on the Borscht Belt circuit.

LARRY WILDE

His 21 books have included
two studies on the serious
business of comedy as well
as other compilations of
ethnic humor.
Some examples of Wilde's
humor taken from the book
include:

Israel Friend

PHILADELPHIA (JTA)
— Gov. Dick Thornburgh of
Pennsylvania visibly im-
pressed by what he de-
scribed as "an exciting and
rewarding five-day trip
through Israel" — his first
look — told reporters in
Jerusalem that "a strong Is-
rael is central to American
interests.
"If the U.S. wants to
preserve its respect on the
international scene, it must
honor its commitments to
its allies," according to a re-
port on the governor's trip
in last week's edition of the
Jewish Exponent.
