French Writer, Romain Gary

PARIS (JTA) — French
Jewish writer, former dip-
lomat and war-time soldier,
Romain Gary died Dec. 2.
He was 66.
He had been depressed
since the suicide last year of
his former wife, American
actress Jean Seberg. Mr.
Gary was convinced that
Miss Seberg, who divorced

Gerald Mosher

Gerald E. Mosher, former
co-owner of Mosher Jewelry
and former owner of Dobbs
Clothing, both in Detroit,
died Dec. 4 at age 64.
Born in Minneapolis,
Mr. Mosher was in
jewelry business from
1950 to 1958. He owned his
clothing store from 1958 to
1973, when he moved to
Florida. He resided in North
Miami, Beach, Fla., at the
time of his death.
Mr. Mosher held mem-
bership in Pisgah Lodge of
Bnai Brith while in Detroit.
He leaves his wife,
Saretta; two daughters,
Mrs. J. Barry (Debra) Rubin
of Northridge, Calif., and
Mrs. Donald (Robin) Hoffer
of North Miami Beach; his
father, Herman of Miami
Beach, Fla.; three brothers,
Harold of Minneapolis, Hil-
bert of Cincinnati, Ohio,
and Abbott of Sioux Falls,
S.D.; two sisters, Mrs.
Gerald (Beverly) Levitt of
Miami, Fla., and Mrs. Ben-
jamin (Charlotte) Pliam of
Miami; and six
grandchildren. Interment
Detroit.

Stern Resigns
WSU Position

Dr. Guy Stern, senior vice
• president and provost at
Wayne State University,
has resigned his position
because of reductions in
state aid to the university.
Dr. Stern said it was his
responsibility to make the
cuts "which are against my
nature."
Dr. Stern will continue in
his position as WSU's senior
academic officer until a
replacement is found. WSU
President Dr. Thomas Bon-
ner has recommended that
Dr. Stern be retained as a
distinguished professor in
the Department of Romance
and Germanic languages.
He is a specialist in German
exile and Holocaust litera-
ture.

David Bruss

David M. Bniss, superin-
tendent of Hygrade Food-
Co. for more than 40 years,
died Dec. 8 at age 68.
Born in Austria, Mr.
ss was the acting ad-
....strator of Cong.
Shaarey Zedek and served
on the board of its men's
club.
He taught in the Russian
program at the Jewish
Community Center and
held membership in Pisgah
Lodge of Bnai Brith and the
Zionist Organization of
America.
He leaves his wife, Ger-
trude; two sons, Neal of
Amherst, Mass., and Ken-
neth of Brookline, Mass.;
and a sister, Mrs. Herman
(Ruth) Solomon of Green-
ville, Miss.

him several years ago, had
been hounded to her death
by the FBI.
Born in Vilna to a Jewish
mother, Mr. Gary came to
France as a boy. When the
war broke out he was serv-
ing as a pilot with the
French Air Force and was
one of the first officers to
join Gen. Charles de Gaul-
le's Free French.
He, served throughout
the war with the French
army and in 1945 entered
the diplomatic service
and at one time was
French Consul General
in Los Angeles. He wrote
a dozen books in several
of which the Jewish con-
tent was foremost.
Several of his books have
been filmed, including
"Roots of Heaven" and
"Promise at Dawn" in which
Moshe Dayan's son, Assaf,
played one of the leading
roles.

Helen Noveck

Helen Noveck, a member
of Jewish women's and
communal organizations,
died Dec. 5 at age 87.
She was a member of
American Mizrachi
Women, Cong. Beth Achim
and its sisterhood and was
active in tasks for many
organizations.
She is survived by three
sons, Rabbi Simon of ToMs
River, N.J., Harold and
Sidney; a daughter, Mrs.
Leonard Handler; a sister,
Mrs. Lena Freeman of Cin-
cinnati, Ohio; and six
grandchildren.

Ann Sapperstein

Ann Saperstein, a
member of Jewish corn-
munal organizations, died
Dec. 5 at age 75.
Born in New York, Mrs.
Sapperstein was a member
of Branch 3 of Workmen's
Circle; secretary-treasurer
of Club Two, Pioneer
Women; and secretary to
the Jewish Community
Center's senior citizens cul-
tural club.
She leaves a daughter,
Mrs. Alvin (Florence)
Goldman; two sisters, Mrs.
Harry (Helen) Starr and
Mrs. Edward (Marion)
Rudner; a brother, Ben
Krawood; and two
grandchildren.
