(JTA) — A leading Or- thodox scholar proposed that Orthodox Jews educate themselves to "lower mate- rial standards to meet the critical financial needs of our Torah institutions," adding, "If we insist on liv- ing 'the good life,' our most important institutions will shrivel and fall by the wayside." That proposal was made to the delegates attending the 58th annual convention of Agudath Israel of America by Rabbi Yaakov Kamenetzky, 'dean of the Mesivta Torah Vodaath. Rabbi Chanoch Ehren- treu, head of the Rabbinical Court in Manchester, England, urged the Ameri- can Jewish community to create a "Torah corps of laymen — professionals and businessmen — to, devote one hour per week to reach out to our uneducated brethren who are waiting to be reunited with their heri- tage." The Bar-Ilan Institute of Holocaust Studies, headed by Prof. Nathaniel Katzburg, is calling on Jewish families everywhere to report any materials in their possession which re- veals some of the experi- ences of religious Jews and their institutions, from the rise of Nazism in the 1920s to the end of World War II.
