Rev. Falwell Rejects Schindler Charge
NEW YORK (JTA) —
The Rev.• Jerry Falwell,
head of the Moral Majority,
has rejected charges by
Rabbi Alexander Schindler
that rightwing religious
fundamentalist groups fos-
ter the growth of anti-
Semitism in the U.S. He
called the assertion "false
and absolutely without
foundation."
At the same time, Rabbi
Abraham Hecht, president
of the Rabbinical Alliance of
America, called Schindler's
charge "both scurrilous and
inane." He said, "As one
who has met and cooperated
with the Moral Majority I
can safely state that the
ominous threats created by
Schindler's fantasy are to-
tally unfounded and devoid
of proof."
Schindler, president of
the Union of American He-
brew Congregations
(UAHC), referred to the
"chilling power of the radi-
cal right" in an address in
San Francisco last week
where the UAHC Board was
meeting. He observed that
it was "no coincidence that
the rise of rightwing Chris-
tian fundamentalism has
been accompanied by the
most serious outbreak of
anti-Semitism in America
since the end of World War
II."
Falwell, in a statement
from his headquarters in
.
Lynchberg, Va., said
Schindler's assertion
that "my activities in the
Moral Majority move-
ment have helped to
create a climate which
has led to anti-Semitic in-
cidents in the United
States" was "false and
absolutely without foun-
dation.
"I do not have to prove to
Rabbi Schindler or anyone
else of my longstanding
friendship for the Jewish
people in America and
around the world, and my
strong and continuing ad-
vocacy of the cause of Is-
rael," Falwell said.
In a blistering statement,
Hecht asserted that, con-
trary to Schindler's view
that the rightwing Chris-
tian grOups are a diasater
for America and the secu-
rity of American Jewry,
"these leaders are men of in-
tegrity, sharing many tra-
ditional beliefs of the
Jewish people . . . values
(which) have long ago been
rejected out of hand by
Schindler and his ilk."
Schindler was also
criticized by Nathan
Perlmutter, national direc-
tor of the Anti-Defamation
League of Bnai brith, for
"looking at the fundamen-
talists as a monolithic
group." He said, "I respect-
fully remind Rabbi Schin-
dler that the Soviet Union,
the prime exporter of anti-
Semitism, is neither Chris-
tian nor fundamentalist .. .
There are good Christians
and bad Christians, good
Jews and bad Jews. To hear
some of the talk lately we'd
also have to say there are
foolish Christians and
foolish Jews."
Meanwhile, Falwell
and the leaders of two
other ultra-conservative
groups have urged
President-elect Ronald
Reagan to implement the
pro-Israel positions he
took during the election
campaign "through your
appointments in the
foreign affairs and de-
fense fields."
The mailgram message,
addressed to Reagan at his
Washington, D.C. head-
quarters, a copy of which
was sent to the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency in New
York City, was signed by
Falwell, president of Moral
Majority, Edward McAteer,
president of the Religious
Roundtable based in Ar-
lington, Va., and Paul
Weyrich, president of the
Committee for the Survival
of Free Congress. The three
groups supported Reagan's
election.

Evangelicals, Jews to Meet
NEW YORK — The sec-
ond national conference of
Evangelical Christians and
Jews will take place next
week at Trinity Evangelical
Divinity School, Deerfield,
Ill.
The announcement was
made jointly by the two co-
chairmen of the meeting;
Kenneth S. Kantzer, editor
of the magazine "Chris-
tianity Today," and Rabbi
Marc H. Tanenbaum, na-
tional director of the inter-
religious affairs of the
American Jewish Commit-
tee, whose respective organ-
izations are the co-sponsors.
The first Evangelical-
Jewish conference was held
in New York in 1975.
Under the title "Evangel-
icals and Jews in an Age of
Pluralism," the meeting
will bring together more
than 70 leading scholars,
theologians, clergymen and
religious educators.
Among the themes to
be examined are: The
Current State of
Evangelical-Jewish Re-
lations; The Moral and
Spiritual Challenge of the
80s; A Jewish View of the
New Testament; An
Evangelical Christian
View of the Hebrew
Scriptures; Jerusalem in
Biblical and Theological
Tradition; The Holocaust
and the Reality of Evil;
Mission, Witness and
Proselytization; Sin,
Atonement and Redemp-
tion.
In a joint statement, Dr.
Kantzer and Rabbi Tanen-
baum declared:
;
'between
Evangelicals and Jews have
been cast into public con-
sciousness in recent months
by virtue of our nation's
quadrennial upheaval
called elections. Unhappily,
the center realities and
complexities of these rela-
tionships have frequently
been far more distorted
than clarified, particularly
as a result of sensationaliz-
ing of issues in the heat of a
Presidential campaign.
"This Second National
Conference of Evangelicals
and Jews is timely and per-
tinent and affords us an
opportunity to separate out
sensationalism from sober
understanding. In this
forum, modeled on its ear-
lier precedent, we will seek
through the insights of
some of our finest Evangeli-
cal and Jewish scholars to
examine what are the au-
thentic and permanent con-
cerns that separate these
two major faith com-
munities and what they
hold in common — as be,_
lievers in the Holy Bible, as
fellow citizens, as members
of the human family."
