2 Friday, December - 5, 19DO " z , THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Purely Commentary The Call to Youth for a Leading Role in Declaring Solidarity with Fighters Against Growing Trend of Anti-Semitism . . . Anti-Zionism IS Anti-Semitism Message of Solidarity in Fight Against Anti-Semites What had seemed like a demonstration "planned too late" has again become a challenge to people everywhere in the struggle against bigotry. The public rally organized for this Sunday afternoon in support of French Jewry again becomes a necessity because of the renewed threats to the French Jewish community, the attack on a Jewish tourist office and the murderous result. The Detroit rally should be judged as a demonstration against all forms of anti-Semitism. It signals the protest against indifference to the occurrences in some French ranks, and it is to be a demonstration of solidarity with those who are threatened and all who mobilize to resist the bigots and to continue the struggle against hatred for Jews wherever they may be. In the process of asserting solidarity, the good people of France and everywhere will never be forgotten: They are the majority who will not approve barbarism and inhumanities. This was demonstrated in Paris when more than 100,000 paraded in protest against anti-Semitism and rebuked authorities for failure to stem the anti-Semitic trends. Those who demonstrated in Paris against the anti-Semites were a majority of young people. Here and everywhere, when Jews demonstrate for justice and human rights, the participants will hope- fully be predominantly the youth. That will provide the answer to the bestialities — that there will never a bowing to bigotry and barbarities. Einstein Among China's Admired; Why Not Also Israel? Confusion Worse Confounded: Anti-Zionism Remains Anti-Semitic Under the cloak of Palestinianism, many ills are covered up, villainy operates as sanctimony and the knife is sharpened for Israel's throat„, Vanessa Redgrave is not onlya good actress. She • is a cleverly-staged diplomat. Her originally-quoted declara- tion advocating Israel's destruction was modified. When it was first publicized she issued this statement through her solicitor in London, Michael Rubinstein: I have always wanted peace for the Palestinians and the Israeli Jews. I have never said that I want the state of Israel to be wiped out. If that were even to be attempted it would mean disaster for all in the Middle East, where the need of all is for security and peace. I support the efforts of the Palestine Liberation Organization for peace negotiations with the Is- raeli government and to establish conditions which will guarantee the basic democratic rights of both peoples and will respect their religious , beliefs. I have always struggled against facism and ra- cism, against both anti-Semitism and anti-Arab Zionism. I support the endeavors of all those among these two peoples, the Palestinians and Israeli Jews, who, whatever their political incli- nations, will work together to build a state where their children can share the land and the wealth they produce. The present terrible state of affairs must be ended. The first step is negotiations. How easily one can be fooled by such sanctimony, even with a concession that the actress means well! Is it possible that Vanessa fools herself by believing that her pal Arafat would spare a single Israeli he would judge as being a Zionist? Does she imagine there is a Jew that Arafat would not label a Zionist? Isn't she realistic enough to know that every Jew IS a Zionist? And why didn't she admit parading with the PLO, brandishing a gun, threatening the very life of Israel and Israelis, when the Arafat-led PLO was pro- claiming Israel's demise? There is lots more to indicate the injustice and barba- rism of a group that has only one objective: Israel's destruc- tion. That's what a PLO-dominated additional Arab state on Israel's borders would mean. Vanessa should be admonished also that when speak- ing of Palestinians she and her cohorts should not overlook the Jews who also are Palestinians. Exemplary is the role Moshe Rivlin, world president of the Keren Kayemet rael — the Jewish National Fund — who is a seventh generation Yerushalmi. Can the PLO leaders match it? Fortunately,, not all who watch Vanessa or hear Arafat's threats are fooled by either or both. The Arabs are not unanimous in their reactions to the two elements, Arafat the would-be destroyer of Israel and Vanessa Red- grave his backer. There is more opposition to the PLO in Arab ranks than is generally publicized. Furthermore, there may be a growing refutation and rejection of the PLO tactics of using Zionism as a scapegoat. Columnists like George Cantor in a recent article in the Detroit News have begun to indicate that the canard aims to brand the Zionist movement in an effort to deny anti- Semitism, while that very means of clearing one-self is an anti-Semitic procedure. The proof in the actions of the ter- rorist barbarians is that anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. It is to the credit of George Cantor and the realists of this era that they expose those hiding under an anti-Zionist cloak and make the truth known.
