Hanuka a Modern Symbol in Battle for Human Rights

fect, the Maccabean victory
was the first successful
triumph in the struggle for
human rights, particularly
for freedom of conscience
and pluralism in the history
of mankind.
Had the Syrians defeated
the Maccabees in the epic
struggle for the right of
every group to be itself, in
its own terms, Judaism
might have perished, and
quite conceivably, Chris-
tianity and Islam would,
never have emerged. That's
how fateful Hanuka was for
the whole human family.

A Seven Arts Feature

Eight lights for human
rights. No more appropriate
theme could be found for
Hanuka 1980. Hanuka
commemorates the victory
of Judah the Maccabee over
the massive armies of the
Syrian Empire, and then
the rededication of the Holy
Temple in Jerusalem which
the Syrians had defiled.
The story of Hanuka
reads like a Bible tale, but
its meaning today is pro-
found and universal. In ef-

Hanuka 1980 hopefully
will heighten the con-
sciousness of the Jewish
people and that of many
others to rekindle the Mac-
cabean spirit in today's
troubled world — to refuse
to stand by idly, to capitu-
late to modern-day tyrants
— the fanatic Ayatollah

Khomeinis of the world —
who desecrate the dignity of
human beings created in
the sacred image of God by
denying religious and polit :
ical freedom.
Instead of cursing the
darkness, Hanuka is a time
to light a candle for life and
hope.

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Sen. Charles Percy (R-Ill.),
who will be chairman of the
Senate Foreign Relations
Committee in the next Con-
gress, envisions a Palesti-
nian state in federation
with Jordan and disarmed
for offensive purposes for at
least 25 years.
He said, on the ABC tele-
vision "Good Morning
America" program Monday
that he and President
Leonid Brezhnev of the
Soviet Union disagreed on
the nature of a Palestinian
state when they met in Mos-
cow last month.
"He (Brezhnev) wants to
see the PLO a sovereign
state, armed with their own
territory," Percy said. "I feel
that it should be in federa-
tion with Jordan. It should
be like Japan and Germany,
disarmed for offensive pur-
poses for at least 25 years
and it must recognize the
rights of Israel to exist, its
sovereignty and to have de-
fensible borders."
