The concept of such an
encyclopedia was envisaged
by Bracha Peli, who in 1932
founded the Masada Pub-
lishing Co. In 1936, the
six-volume Encyclopedia
Masada was issued as a
forerunner to the
Encyclopedia Hebraica.
Remarkably, Bracha Peli at
89 still remains active as
president of the company.

The Leningrad Academy
of Science wrote for the later
volumes but, unfortunately,
it has not been possible to
send editions there since the
Soviet Union broke off dip-
lomatic relations with Is-

Work on the encyclopedia
goes on. An index will be is-
sued in two years time, as
well as supplementary vol-

formation but also be-
cause it provides Hebrew
readers with endless
academic information on
subjects like astronomy,
medicine, history and
politics, which are
otherwise unavailable in
Hebrew.
In fact the encyclopedia
fills a vacuum for inquiring
schoolchildren, as well as
being appreciated by schol-
ars worldwide. Masada pub-
lishing received an anxious
letter several years ago
from the British Museum
wanting copies of the final
volumes of the encyclopedia

Chaim Weizmann was
skeptical when the project
was begun in 1946, that an
encyclopedia could be pro-
duced worthy of standing
alongside the likes of the
Encyclopedia Americana or
Britannica. But in 1949,
when the first volume was
published, he was pleas-
antly surprised and ex-
pressed admiration at what
he considered an accom-
plished edition.
Thousands of copies
were snapped up and
since then an average of
one new volume a year
has been produced.
Today more than 60,000
sets have been purchased
and each volume sells at
130 Shekels ($22). It has
been claimed that the
completion of the project
is very much behind
schedule and that in the
past this left a bitter taste
in the mouth of some sub-
scribers.
Prof. Joshua Prawer is
the present editor of
Encyclopedia Hebraica.
The encyclopedia con-
tains more than 30,000
entries written by 1,200
scholars, 40 of whom are
Nobel Prize holders.
Paradoxically, the last of all
the entries is Tishri, the
Hebrew month at the start
of the year. The seventh
volume deals solely with Is-
rael.
Encyclopedia Hebraica
differs from Encyclopedia
Judaica not only because it
is in Hebrew but because it
includes universal as well
as Jewish knowledge. So,
for example, entries such as
Brazil and Brussels are first
dealt with in general terms
and- then have a section for
their Jewish history.
The encyclopedia's
value is that it not only
contains a wealth of in-
