JERUSALEM — Prime
Minister Menahem Begin's
government, already under
fire for Israel's 135 percent
inflation, was criticized this
week for reportedly offering
$470,000 to each Sinai fam-
ily that will be forced to
move to the Negev by the
Israeli-Egyptian peace
agreement.
Some 350 families will be
forced to leave their farms
when Egypt takes over the
final section of the Sinai in
1982.

Technion Scientist Develops New
Packaging for Michigan Apples

By PAUL HIRSCHHORN

Special to The Jewish News

HAIFA — After a year as
visiting scientist studying
packaging at Michigan
State University, Technion
agricultural engineer Dr.
Kalman Peleg has de-
veloped a new, more effi-
cient method for packaging
Michigan apples.
The "KP" system, which
bears Peleg's initials, has
already been in use for three
years by Israel's Citrus
Marketing Board. It can
also be used in decorative
packaging and displays.
The latter has been demon-
strated in Chicago super-
markets.
"Until now, high quality
apples have been trans-
ported with a tray between
each layer of the fruit," ex-
plains Dr. Peleg. "This is a
waste of space and mate-
rials. In the KP system, no
trays are needed, except for
the bottom of the package."
The system centers
around the arrangement of
packed fruit in a highly effi-
cient crystallographic de-
sign, based on the structure
of the carbon atoms in
diamonds which is the most
densely packed atomic lat-
tice.
"We have gone back to
nature, found the natural
structure of diamond crys-
tals, and reproduced it.
There are 12 contact points,
the maximum possible be-
tween a sphere and its
neighbor, which reduces
pressure and damage.
Transport facilities will
be used more efficiently,
and farm produce will reach

its destination in better
condition, through the ap-
plication of the system.
When arranged in the KP
pattern every fruit rests on
exactly four others, and is in
firm contact with twelve
neighbors. That allows
weight to be distributed
evenly, and also holds pro-
duce firmly in place, pre-
venting damage due to
bouncing of fruit.
"The system's weak point
could have been the bottom
layer in each container,
where every fruit rests not
on four other pieces, but
rather on the flat bottom of
the box. Pressure from
above now concentrates on
one, rather than four points,
resulting in deformed and
often in spoiled fruits," ex-
plains Peleg.
To solve the problem, Dr.
Peleg designed low cost
polystyrene trays, with cup
sizes and shapes to match
the characteristics of each
type and size to be packed.
Bottom layer fruit no longer
rests on one point against a
hard flat surface, but rather
it is cushioned. This elimi-
nates deformation.
The system's benefits can
be increased through the
automation of the packing
process itself. Because the
bottom tray determines the
arrangement, there is no

signed report in the French
weekly L'Express alleging
an association between Yit-
zhak Rabin and one of Is-
rael's top underworld fig-
ures, Bezalel Mizrahi. Ac-
cording to the allegation,
Mizrahi paid the $37,400
fine levied against Mrs.
Rabixi-in 1977 for maintain-
ing a bank account in the
U.S. in violation of Israel's
currency regulations.

According to L'Express,
Mzrahi's check is in Shimon
Peres' possession.
The report backfired
against Peres, who has ac-
cused in some quarters of
inspiring the anonymous al-
legation to discredit his
rival on the eve of the party
elections. Peres himself de-
nounced the report as
calumny, but he was reluc-
tant to provide a written
statement that it was un-
true and that he had noth-
ing to do with it.
Later, Peres sale
was willing to pros
Rabin with an affidavit if
he needed it for a libel ac-
tion against L'Express.

Rabin said he wanted the
statement not for legal rea-
sons but to "purify the at-
mosphere" within the party.
Peres said he would give it if
Rabin asked him "nicely."
But Rabin demanded a
sworn affidavit to be pre-
pared by himself, that Peres
had no check from Mizrahi.
He said a document would
be an important component
of his suit against L'Ex-
press.
