New Cooling Unit
Saves Energy
on Israeli Buses

HAIFA — A hydrogen air
conditioning unit powered
by the exhaust heat gener-
ated by a motor vehicle is
being developed at the
Technion-Israel Institute of
Technology.
, The new system will en-
able sharp reduction in
energy use, especially in
buses, which in powering
their air conditioning sys-
tems, can consume up to 25
percent of the energy pro-
duced by their engines. The
research is sponsored by the
Israel Ministry of Energy.
Professors Moshe Ron, of
the department of rpaterials
engineering and Uri Navon,
of the faculty of mechanical
engineering are developing
a new heat pump which
makes use of metal-
hydrides, compounds, that
consist of hydrogen and
metals or alloys. These
compounds can quickly ab-
sorb large amounts of hyd-
rogen gas, and then free it
again, depending on
environmental conditions.
The researchers have
taken advantage of the fact
that each hydride reacts to
different temperatures and
pressures — some release
the gas at room tempera-
ture, others at well above
the boiling point of water.
They intend to use two
different hydrides, each in a
separate container, linked
by gas conduits. One con-
tainer is heated by a ve-
hicle's exhaust gas, which
causes the release of the
hydrogen absorbed earlier.
It is then conducted to the
second hydride tank, where
it is absorbed and then ex-
pelled again. A cooling ef-
fect is concomitant of the re-
lease of hydrogen from this
container. TIN, gas returns
to the first container, be-
coming available for an-
other cycle.
