He made the pledge to 100 Jewish leaders represent- ing grassroots communities throughout the metropoli- tan area at a meeting spon-. sored by the Metropolitan New York Coordinating Council on Jewish Poverty. In response to a question about affirmative action, Klutznick said that the Commerce Department was commited to a policy of equal opportunity in em- ployment for all groups. Another comment criticized the impact of the Small Business Ad- ministration's purported policy of granting 85 per- cent of SBA loans to minorities and 15 percent to all othe applicants similarly unable to get conventional bank financing. Klutznick said that "if the allocation process is discriminat- ory, it should be changed." In response to a request from Menahem Shayovich, Coordinating Council president, Klutznick said he would be willing to set up a meeting with SBA head, Vernon Weaver, to discuss the matter. He stressed that his position was that "appli- cations should be taken on the basis of qualifications and need." Quick Burial Jewish Custom WANT TO SHARE YOUR HOME OR APT? OR LOOKING FOR A PLACE TO LIVE? quickly as possible. It is thus regarded as an insult to the deceased to have his body linger with- out being buried quickly: Some of the rabbinic sources like to trace this custom to the Biblical passage where Miriam, the sister of Moses, is reported to have died and immediate after annoucing her death she "was buried there" (Numbers 10:1). By RABBI SAMUEL FOX (Copyright 1980, JTA, Inc.) Jewish tradition requires that the dead be buried as soon as possible and it is in- teresting to note that the rabbis trace this practice back to the burial of an exe- cuted criminal in the Bible. One who has been hanged "shall not remain on the tree overnight but you shall bury him on that same day" (Deuteronomy 21:23). This indicates that even a person who has been executed for a crime shall be buried as CALL THE SELECTABLES 552-0323 WE HAVE THE PLACE FOR YOU! Dr. Bryen was the keyn- ote speaker at a national conference on energy educa- tion for a select group of some 125 staff members and students of the Bnai Brith Hillel Foundations. The three-day meeting, held at the University of Maryland, opened a year- long project to educate stu- dents, faculty and adminis- tration on energy on college campuses in the United States. The project is co- sponsored by Hillel and the Zionist Organization of America. The conference focused on the importance for America to reduce its dependence on imported oil and to develop alternative sources of energy. The conference also focused on Jewish values and their relationship to energy questions and an- swers. It is quite as much of a trade to make a book, as to make a clock. It requires more than mere genius to be an author. —Bruyere GODIVA® Cf ocolatier has a delicious gift for you: Come in for this month's complimentary gift with purchase of Godiva Chocolates.* *While supply lasts.
