Schindler Links Christian Right With Anti-Semitism

SAN FRANCISCO (JTA)
— A leader of American Re-
form Judaism charged last
weekend that there is a link
between right-s, ing fun-
damentalist Christian
groups and the proliferation
of anti-Semitic acts in the
United States. Rabbi Ale-
xander Schindler, president
of the Union of American
Hebrew Congregations
(UAHC), also denounced
certain Jewish groups that
were "eager to make ac-
commodation to. the Chris-
' right and grab what-
' r short-term gains there
nay be at the expense of in-
tegrity and self-respect."
Schindler, speaking at a
Sabbath service at Temple
Emanuel attended by mem-
bers of the UAHC board of
trustees here for their
semi-annual meeting, re-
ferred in that connection
specifically to the
Jabotinsky Centennial
Dinner Committee and the
Anti-Defamation League of-
Bnai Brith.
"When the Jabotinsky
Foundation presents its
award to Jerry Falwell for
his support of Israel and the
Anti-Defamation League
offers its platform to Pat
Robertson of the Christian
Broadcasting Network to
speak about Jerusalem it is
madness — and suicide,"
Schindler said. He urged
American Jews instead to
reach out to moderate
Christians and black groups
to form "coalitions of de-

Or

cency against the chilling
power of the radical right."
According to Schin-
dler, it was "no coici-
dence that the rise of
right-wing Christian
fundamentalism has
been accompanied by the
most serious outbreak of
anti-Semitism in America
since the end of
World War II." He ob-
served that "when the
head of the 'Moral Major-
ity' (Falwell) demands a

Evron Is Praised by Begin
to Squelch Ouster Rumors

JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Prime Minister Menahem
Begin went out of his way
this week to praise Ambas-
sador to Washington Ep-
hraim Evron, and thus to
squelch persistent rumors
that Evron may be replaced.
Reporting to the Cabinet on
his recent private visit to
the U.S., Begin noted that
Ambassador Evron had
been fulfilling his duties
entirely satisfactorily.
There was criticism of
Evron in some political
quarters here following

victory. He was accused of
having been too identified

with the Carter camp and
having failed to forge links
with the men of the new
administration.
Evron was also faulted for

his handling of the delicate
(and unproductive) contacts
with Reagan's staff over the
possibility of a Reagan-
Begin meeting.
Premier Begin told the
ministers he had not in
fact sought a meeting
with Reagan — under-
standing the President-
elect's special situation,
nor was Israel or he per-
sonally in any way miffed
at the fact that Reagan
had met with German
Chancellor Helmut
Schmidt, Begin added.
Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir took the opportu-
nity to re-state his own ear-
lier support for Ambassador
Evron. Shamir repeated to
the Cabinet what he had
said two weeks earlier: that
Evron had acted properly
and efficaciously during the
pre-election period, main-
taining close contacts with
the incumbent administra-
tion and trying at the same
time in an unofficial way to
form ties with the Reagan
camp.
Officials in Jerusalem
were anxious to publicize
Begin's and Shamir's re-
marks regarding Evron be-
cause the rumors about him
— especially within some
U.S. Jewish quarters — had
apparently not been laid to
rest by earlier denials from
Jerusalem.
