The Best of Everything
(Continued from Page 44)
Sept. 2-7.
During- the 1980 festival
an estimated 500,000 jazz
lovers attended concerts at
various downtown sites .. .
Expanded programming is
planned for 1981 offering
visitors as well as residents
six days to experience a true
jazz spectacular . . . At least,
that is what it should be .. .
Much of last year's disap-
pointments should serve as
an experience to the hosts of
1981's jazz bonanza . . . This
has always been a great
European event and Detroit
should hold its head high
and do better by it than last
year.

WEIGHT WATCHERS
tips' to college students .. .
from Florine Mark,
president and director of
Weight Watchers for this
area . . . "For many young
adults this is their first
opportunity to exercise
freedom of choice in their
eating. Left to their own de-
vices, they deprive them-
selves of the well balanced
meals which were served at
home.
"Breakfast is skipped.
Lunch and dinner are taken
on the run, favoring menus
overloaded with fats and re-
fined sugar. Further, their
physical activity level is
often curtailed as they give
spare time for study time.
This can lead to what is
commonly called 'freshman
10,' the 10 extra pounds that
pile on during that crucial
first year.
"Simply giving up meals
is not the answer. It is vital
for college-students to

maintain good eating habits
so that they can function at
their full potential, both
physically and mentally.
"Failure to eat prop-
erly can result in a self-
made handicap affecting
academic performance
and, perhaps, leading to
health problems in later
years. The answer is to
learn to make intelligent
food choices. There's no
reason for students to
avoid joining the crowd
for an occasional bite at
favorite college meeting
spots, but if weight is a
problem, then simple
care over what is ordered
can make all the dif-
ference.
"A hamburger or
frankfurter broiled on a
rack, a glass of milk and a
salad are available at a lot
of Tast-food' places now, and
makes a good meal. Fruit
for dessert satisfies both the
need for sweets and the need
for fiber. But fried foods,
special sauces laden with
fats, or beverages contain-
ing sugar will only provide
an excess of - 'empty'
calories — calories that con-
tain little nutritional value.
"College should be a time
for expanding one's hori-
zons, not one's waistline. A
sensible, nutritous, low
calorie, well-balanced eat-
ing plan should help insure
both."
