Linowitz Contrasts Begin, Sadat

STATE OF
ISRAEL BONDS
BEFORE MATURITY

NEW YORK (ZINS) — In
an interview with Jane
Rosen of London's The
Guardian, Sol Linowitz,
President Carter's envoy for
the Middle East, said that
Israeli Premier Menahem
Begin walks in "his own his-
tory, the Holocaust always
hovering over him." He
wants to be known as a
peacemaker but not, he tells
Linowitz, at the cost of a
single Jewish life.
If Begin has his way, Is-
rael will never give up Eretz
Yisrael, the biblical pat-
rimony, "the land of my
fathers." Linowitz described

NEW YORK (JTA) — In a
move to actively encourage
aliya, the United
Synagogue of America, the
congregational arm of the
Conservative movement,
has announced that it has
helped organize the first
United Synagogue "Garin
Nitzan" (nucleus), a group
of young men and women
who will band together to
live in Israel in a communal
settlement.
Schwartz,
Simon
president of the United
Synagogue, and Rabbi Ben-
jamin Kreitman, executive
vice president, said the new
group is composed of "a
dedicated core of young
idealists trained in the val-
ues of Conservative
Judaism."
The garin, a project of the
Department of Israel Af-
fairs and Aliya of the
'Rifted Synagogue, has re-
ceived the official endorse-
ment of the Tnua M'soratit,,
the movement of Conserva-
tive Judaism in Israel.
Garin Nitzan expects to
organize its settlement
within the borders of Israel.
As of now, the core group of
the new garin consists of
about 25 persons from
throughout the United
States. The garin is open to
married couples and sing-
les, ages 22-35, who plan to
settle in Israel within five
years.

Detroit in late January or early February?

If you know anyone who graduated from
Northern in either of those classes, please
advise that person and ask him or her to
contact me immediately. 1 suggest that

Begin as a lawyer concerned
about specific details, the
precise word.
In contrast, Sadat has a
grand sweep, a general feel-
ing of what he wants to ac-
complish and leaves details
to his lieutenants. Linowitz
described Sadat as an "ex-
traordinary man, relaxed,
easy, supremely confident
of his instincts and judg-
ment, sure of his role as a
peacemaker and convinced
that the rest of the world

will eventually follow him."
He is truly committed to
helping the Palestinians to
achieve full autonomy,
Linowitz said.

A tone for
the Guilty

By LEO SCHNEIDERMAN

In this world
The innocent atone
For the sins of the guilty.
Will there be a Yom Kippur
In the life-to-come?
If so
The pattern will remain un-
changed
The slain asking the Holy
One
To forgive their slayers.
