BEERSHEVA — The food and agriculture organ- ization of the United Na- tions has awarded Dr.-- - Rueven Yagil, a veterinarian-physiologist at the Center for Health Sciences, Ben-Gurion Uni- versity of the Negev, a grant to draw up a comprehensive report on camel milk as an economically viable means to combat starvation and malnutrition in arid zones the world over. Research by Dr. Yagil, former veterinarian of the IDF (Israel Defense Force) Camel Corps, low fat milk which lactating camels have in abundance, points to its use as a solution to the malnutrition problem. Philosophy is the science Dr. Yagil maintains that that considers truth. camel milk is practically a complete food for a human child living in a hot, dry region..In fact, according to Dr. Yagil, one lactating camel can sustain several families for weeks at a time, even if the camel itself is fasting. "If we had to sit down and design what we would want to give a child living in an area that's hot and short of water, we would need a food that contained a lot of water, 'a lot of salt, little fat and good nutritional value." This is exactly what the camels produce under harsh, arid condi- tions. RAMAT-GAN .— Aca- demic circles in the United States are displaying inter- est in the free radical theory of plant aging intensively developed over the past two years by a team of resear- chers at Bar-Ilan Univer- sity. This theory involves biological oxidation and the formation of vicious oxygen species with unpaired elec- trons, designated by scien- tists as free radicals. According to the Bar-Ilan team, the theory is of inter- est not_only in plants but in mammals, including man. The Bar-Ilan research has gone into the mechanism of the formation of these free radicals and modes for prevention of their formation, and by so doing increasing the life span of agricultural pro- duce, such as stored fruit, vegetables and cut flowers. Dr. Yagil's research has long attracted international attention but until now, political considerations have prevented him from traveling to international conferences on the subject held in countries hostile to Israel or meeting with Arab camel experts. iailwork Insured 21751 Coolidge, Oak Park Deliver & Pick-Up Our Maid We supervise our work nail care specialists Happy Hanukkah A knight plaza • suite 104 26561 west twelve mile southfield, michigan 48032 352-7770 P- HANUKA GIFTS 39c & UP Always 20%Off On DECORATOR PHONES CALL NOW 352-8288 • exclusive MICHIGAN DISTRIBUTOR OF SALES • SERVICE • CUSTOM LEASE PLANS Americans Study Diamond Mart RAMAT-GAN — The Ig- rael Diamond Exchange played host last month to leaders of the Diamond Dealers Club of New York, in order to assist the Ameri- cans in establishing the first official diamond trade building in the United States.
