Kashrut Law
Called Matter
of Discipline

By RABBI SAMUEL FOX
(Copyright 1980, JTA Inc.)

It is forbidden for a Jew to
consume milk and meat
products at the same time.
This is a basic matter of
discipline in Jewish reli-
gious behavior.
Some have pointed to the
fact that "boiling the kid in
its mother's milk" was a
means of idol worship in an-
cient times. It has also been
suggested that meat and
milk products have a differ-
ent rate of digestion and ab-
sorption in the body. Their
mixture might thus possi-
bly have an effect on the di-
gestive system.

. Still others maintain that
mixing the two, the meat of
the "kid" and the milk of the
mother, would seem to be
excessively cruel because
one is digesting both resi-
dues together, just as it is
forbidden to slaughter a
mother and her offspring in
the animal kingdom less
than eight days apart when
preparing sacrifices or
slaughtering for food gen-
erally. I-

Next to doing things that
deserve to be written, noth-
ing gets a man more credit,
or gives him more pleasure
than to write things that de-
serve to be read.
