ADL YESTERDAY AND TODAY: I remember the
Anti-Defamation League from way back in the 1920s when
its office was in Chicago where Adolph Kraus, the Bnai
Brith president, resided.
There was social prejudice against Jews in those years
but no political anti-Semitism. Political anti-Semitism
came later with Henry Ford's importation to this country of
`" .0- notorious "Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and with the
ablication of his virulently anti-Semitic magazine,
"Dearborn Independent." He later regretted his anti-
Jewish campaign -and apologized publicly in a letter to
Louis Marshall, then president of the American Jewish
Committee.
With political anti-Semitism practically unknown to
Americans prior to Ford's sudden pathological animosity
toward Jews, the activities of the ADL were concentrated in
those early years of its existence on combatting the offen-
sive image of Jews created by vaudeville actors on the
American stage.
The actors were not anti-Semites — in fact, many of
them were Jews — but they considered it smart entertain-
ment to tell funny stories about Jews:
The leaders of the ADL made it one of their major aims
to combat this kind of defamation. It did not take them long
to be successful. The ADL, naturally, also stood on guard
against any other forms of defamation of Jews.
The ADL developed a wide program of fighting bigotry
and prejudice, watching all forms of anti-Semitism and
discriminatory behavior against Jews in this country, ex-
posing anti-Israel activities and propaganda in the United
States, promoting inter-religious friendship and keeping
an eye on anti-Jewish developments overseas . Today-, the
ADL maintains 28 regional offices in the U.S., always on
the alert in all parts of the country.
EYES ON FRANCE: The latest move of the ADL was
to send one of its top executive officers, Abraham Foxman,
to Paris to study the size of anti-Semitism in France which
culminated in the recent bombing of the Rue Copernic
synagogue and in anti-Jewish terrorist acts in various
parts of France.
The report which Foxman submitted to ADL leaders --
and to leaders of the Jewish federations — indicates that he
found the Jewish community in France concerned but not
panicked; worried but not desperate; security-conscious but
not paralyzed in its day-to-day activities.
An innovation has, however, been introduced in the
allocation system of the organized Jewish community —
funds for security and self-defense. No Jewish institution
today and no Jewish event remains unguarded and unpro-
tected by volunteer Jewish youth.
ADL FOR EUROPE: Additional concern to the
Jewish community is the reaction of the "average" Fren-
chman in the vicinity of the synagogue on Rue Copernic.
Some Frenchmen were blaming the victims rather than the
perpetrators.
In light of the growing anti-Semitic forces in France—
and the growing extremist movements in other countries in
Europe — the ADL leadership believes that the organiza-
tion, with its many years of experience in active counterac-
tion against the forces of anti-Semitism, has a vital role to
play now in Europe. An ADL office, formed by a group of
Jews in France, is now functioning in Paris monitoring the
activities of the anti-Semitic groups and individuals in
various European countries, their domestic links, their in-
ternational contacts and their propaganda material.
