Rochester, Michigon 48063 NCCJ Leader Blasts Bailey Smith Remarks NEW YORK — Dr. David Hyatt, president of the Na- tional Conference of Chris- tians and Jews has issued a response to Bailey Smith's remark in a recent sermon in which he is quoted as say- ing that Jews have "funny- looking noses." In a statement given to the press from his New York headquarters, Hyatt said: "Once again Americans are shocked by a public comment from a Christian religious leader that re- flects the kind of latent anti-Semitism that exists in this nation. It's those kinds of snide remarks that, if left unchallenged, plant the virulent cancers that lead to Holocausts, apartheid laws and social repression, sanctioned by an elite few. "The NCCJ calls upon all Americans, especially our political leaders led by President Carter and • • •• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •- • • • • • • • • • • • We Take The Worry Out Of • • • • • DRAPERY CLEANING • • • • • Drapery cleaning when properly done is an art, we at CUSTOM • • • • • • • • • • • * • • • • • • • • • DRAPERY CLEANERS practice most diligently, in our never ending quest to improve our service to you by seeking better systems and methods. "Dr. Smith should keep his anti-Semitic feelings to himself, and certainly not use the pulpit to promulgate his brand of bigotry and anti-Semitism. It is uncons- cionable and immoral for him to use his position as head of the Southern Bap- tist Convention to fan the flames of prejudice. "This unthinking anti- Semitic remark from his re- cent sermon, 'Why did God choose the Jews? I don't know why. I think they've got funny-looking noses myself. I don't know why. That's God's business,' was reported in the Dallas Morning News on Nov. 13. "His earlier remark in Dallas in August that 'God Almighty does not hear the prayer of a Jew,' was theologically primitive and this is a throwback to the cruel and vicious way of thinking that spawned the Ku Klux Klan and the Nazi movement. "As a Catholic and a Christian, I find his comments repugnant, outrageous and danger- ous. They must not be allowed to go unan- swered. Dr. Smith appar- ently forgets that Jesus himself was a Jew. Mor e over, he in no way speaks for the Christian community as a whole. "Indeed, his attitude toward Jews, if his remarks are an indication, is not only anti-Semitic and anti- Christian, as well, but it violates the spirit and teachings of Jesus. "The Dallas press reports of Dr. Smith's remarks, taken in context, indicate he thought he was being humorous and lighthearted and that he 'loves his Jewish friends.' But the im- plication of what he said was insensitively derogat- ory and a gross and terrible put-down, sadly unworthy of any Christian or Jew with ecumenical understanding, let alone the president of America's most numeri- cally dominant Protestant group." "But if the pizza man ul- timately shows up at your door, with the right amount of pepperoni and cheese, you know he heard your request after all, even though he didn't answer his phone. g, "Weird? Not to the Rev. Bailey Smith, who is fast becoming my favorite weirdo in the category of or- ganized religion, clergy di- vision." Fitzgerald concluded his column with the following thought: "Certainly, everybody has a right to tease, but Bailey Smith is wasting his time. God doesn't hear the teasing of Bap- fist ministers who preach that only Christians can order pizza over the phone. I know this is a fact because I read it in a pamphlet I got rack in the back kosher restaurant. "Of course, even the most fundamental Christian preachers can tease if their - teasing ultimately leads them to a knowledge of the true access to pepperoni, which is through cheese. ."If pizza is delivered to Bailey Smith's door, it won't be because God heard him teasing. It will be because the pizza man watits to see if a giant-size pizza can be stuck up Mr. Smith's wasp- shaped nose. "(That last sentence was an aside, and not part of my column.)"
