This is a time of de- struction and anger. My children, be zealous for the Law, and give your lives in behalf of the testament of our fathers. Be mindful of the deeds of our fathers, which they performed in their generations, that you may receive great glory and eternal renown. Was not Abraham found faithful in time of trial, and it was accounted to him for righteousness? Joseph, in the time of his distress, kept the commandment and became lord of Egypt. Phineas, our ancestor, in preserv- ing his zeal received the promise of - eternal priesthood. Joshua for fulfilling a command be- came a judge in Israel. Caleb for bearing witness in the congregation obtained an inheritance in the land. David because of his mercy inherited the throne of an everlasting kingdom. Elijah be- cause of his great love for the Law was taken up into -heaven. Hananiah, Azariah, arid—Mishael, because they had faith, were rescued from fire. Daniel because of his innocence was saved from the mouth of the lions. Consider how, throughout each generation, none who put their trust in Him will lack strength. Of the words of a sinful man be not afraid, because his glory shall become dung and worms. Today he may be exalted, but tomor- row he will nowhere be found, because he has returned to his dust,- and memory of him will have perished. As for you, my children, be strong and courageous in behalf of the Law, for through it you will be glorified. Behold Simon your brother; I know that he is a man of wise counsel. Obey him always; he will be a father to you. Judah Maccabee, strong in might fr-om his youth, will be the leader of the army and will fight the people's war. As for you, gather about you all.who observe the Law, and avenge fully the wrong done to your people. Requite the heathen meas- ure for measure, and obey the ordinance of the Law."
