GROSSINGER, N.Y.
(JTA) — The leader of the
American Zionist Federa-
tion said that he sees a new
mood in America which will
make the period ahead
uniquely different for
Zionists and friends of Is-
rael.
The new mood, according
to Rabbi Joseph Sternstein,
president of the AZF, was
underscored by what he
termed the remarkable
political swing to the right
in the U.S. Presidential
election and the political,
international and economic
forces which contributed to
the results.

ing session of the AZF's
sixth biennial convention at
Grossinger's, said that
"Zionists and friends of Is-
rael must immediately
come to grips with this new
ideological climate from the
perspective of American re-
lationships with Israel and
the average American's
understanding of Zionism."
This is "of particular
urgency," he said, "be-
cause in recent years the
American Jew has be-
come more parochial. His
concern with domestic
Jewish affairs has been
on a rapid increase.
However, there is also an
evident decrease in his
*concern for Israel."
Sternstein pointed to a
"lack of 'education" as the
primary cause of this de-
cline, a situation which has
forced Zionism, as a revolu-
tionary movement, to take a
back seat to domestic con-
cerns.
It is "of paramount impor-
tance that the Zionist
movement in America move
forward with resolve and
vigor in the area of educa-
tion," Sternstein_ said.
He said that "politically,
it is clear that in Congress
there lies a specific chal-
lenge for Zionists and
friends of Israel. For, as al-
ways, Congress has been
the arena for basic, final
and the fundamental deci-
sions and climate for our
concerns."
Because "new faces"
are moving to the foref-
ront of political- leader-
ship in America, "they
are unaware of the fun-
damental meaning and
import of Zionism and its
significance as a majestic
movement for the Jewish
people and hUmanity
throughout the world,"
Sternstein said.
Sternstein said he will
call for a special meeting of
American Zionist leader-
ship to explore the rele-
vance of these new political
changes and said,-he will
suggest the launching of a
national American confer-
ence or commission made up
of Americans of "all faiths,

Pope Meets German Jews

BONN (JTA) — Pope
John Paul II conferred with
representatives of the Cen-
tral Organization of Ger-
man Jews in Mainz on Mon-
day, the ancient Rhineland
city where Jews have lived
continuously for more than
900 years.
He spoke in praise of
German Jews who contrib-
uted to German culture and
of the declarations by
Catholic bodies in West
Germany in recent years
calling for a broader base ,of
understanding with the
Jewish community. He
criticized, by implication
the dormant role of the
church in Germany during
the era of Nazi persecution.
The Pontiff refrained
from mentioning Israel in
the course of his dialogue
with 30 prominent West
German Jews representing
a total Jewish population of
40,000 in the Federal Re-
public. According to Par-
ticipants in the meeting, his
comments made no refer-
ence of the Arab-Israeli con-
flict and all of his references
were to the "Holy Land." He
expressed hope that
Jerusalem will enjoy peace
and prosperity and that all
parties involved would
cooperate toward those go-

Last week, however, the
Pope said that any Middle
East solution that did not
recognize Palestinian
rights and the religious
uniqueness of Jerusalem
would be only a partial solu-
tion and he rejected it.

Israeli Pushes
Nuclear Ban

UNITED NATIONS
(JTA) — Israel introduced a
draft resolution calling on
all Middle East countries
"to convene at the earliest
possible date a conference
with a view to negotiating
the multi-lateral treaty es-
tablishing a nuclear
weapons-free zone in the
Mideast."
The measure was pre-
sented to the General As-
sembly's First Committee
by Ambassador Arieh Elan
of Israel's UN Mission.

Much of the dialogue
Monday was devoted to the
persecution of Jews by the
Third Reich. Werner
Nachmann, chairman of the
Central Council of Jews in
Germany, told the Pontiff,
"The land of Israel has be-
come a symbol of our survi-
val after the Holocaust.
He departed from his pre-
pared text to urge the Vati-
can to support the Middle
East peace process based on
the Camp David Accords.
Referring to Jerusalem, he
said that never in its history
was access to the holy places
by people of all faiths more
free than it is today.

Dead Sea Canal
Protests Rejected

JERUSALEM (ZINS) —
Israel has rejected protests
by Jordan and Egypt about
the proposed electric power
canal from the Mediterra-
nean to the Dead Sea.
Israeli experts say the
canal would raise the Dead
Sea to the level it was 15
years ago and would not
threaten Jordan's phos-
phate installations. Israel
has far-larger installations
on the Dead Sea.
Israeli economic experts,
however, are concerned that
the 10-year plan, which in-
cludes a hydroelectric
power plant, will cost 50
percent more than the cur-
rent estimate of $700 mil-
lion.
