Neo-Nazism Up
in Latin America

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA)
— The rise of neo-Nazi ac-
tivities and anti-Semitism
in Latin America and
elsewhere was the leading
item on the agenda of the
five-day conference of Latin
American Jewish Com-
munities in Sao Paulo last
week, attended by some 300
delegates from 12 countries.
Meanwhile, Rabbi Henry
Sobel of the Congregation of
Central European Jews in
Sao Paulo (CIP), warned of
inroads made by the Pales-
tine Liberation Organiza-
tion prepresentative in
Brazil, Farid Sawan, in his
propaganda campaign
aimed at Brazilian stu-
dents.
Speaking on "A Voz Is-
raelita," the Jewish radio
program in Rio de Janeiro,
Sobel referred to the recent
anti-Israel pro-PLO rally by
350 student leaders, some of
them Jewish, in Piracicaba,, ,
100 miles from Sao Paulo.

KIAMESHA LAKE,
N.Y. (JTA) — A motion
supporting the ordination of
women to the rabbinate in
the Conservative move-
ment was overwhelmingly
approved by the nearly
2,000 delegates attending
the national convention of
the Women's League for
Conservative Judaism here.
In an interview before the
voting, Dr. Gerson Cohen,
Chancellor of the Jewish
Theological Seminary of
America, who is on record in
favor of women in the rab-
binate, said that "the ordi-
nation of women in the Con-
servative and modern Or-
thodox movements is only a
matter of time."
He cautioned, how-
ever, that "a frontal at-
tack will only spit the
community" and he ex-
pressed fear that a posit-
ive vote by the Women's
League could stiffen op-
position to ordination.
