Likud Survives Confidence Motion

— =O.

(Continued from Page 1)
Weizman recalled that
exactly three years ago this
past 'Thursday, President
Anwar Sadat came to
Jerusalem launching the
peace process. This, he said,
was one of the major turn-
ing points in Israel's his-
tory, but, the former defense
chief accused the govern-
ment of souring the people
on the peace agreement by
1 ming all of Israel's eco-
Winic problems on - the
price of peace."

Reactions to Weiz-
man's speech were
mixed. Deputy Premier
Simha Ehrlich called it
"sincere and patriotic,"

but Haim Corfu, chair-
man of the coalition and a
member of Herut, said
Weizman had pro-
nounced his own sen-
tence.
„In the debate preceeding
the vote opposition parties
strongly attacked the gov-
ernment's economic
policies.
Finance Minister Yigal
Hurwitz, whose economic
policies are being blamed
for Israel's resurgent infla-
tion, ran into a storm of
criticism in the Likud
,Knesset faction amid specu-
lation that he is about to re-
sign — which he denies —
and demands from some
MKs that he rin cn

The most vociferous critic
was Weizman, who quit the
cabinet earlier this year de-
cause, among other reasons,
Hurwitz threatened to slash
the defense budget. How-
ever, Weizman accused the
embattled treasury chief of
not cutting it enough.

.

Hurwitz came under
fire in the Knesset and in
the cabinet Sunday be-
cause of spiraling infla-
tion.
Much of the anger against
Hurwitz stems from his
proposal that the treasury
hereafter prepare the na-
tional budget without con-
sulting the various minis-
tries in advance and that

the budget be based on what
the treasury believes to be
the state's resources. Wel-
fare Minister Yisrael Katz
charged that this would
lead to "economic dictator-
ship."
Meanwhile, an estimated
10,000 Israelis participated
in a mass demonstration
Sunday to denounce the
government's economic
policies which they blamed
for the surging inflation
rate.

The demonstration was
organized by Histadrut
whose Secretary General,
Yeruham Meshel, de-
manded that Hurwitz re-
sign.

Detroiter Shares Copy of eizmann Letter

Letters written by Dr.
Chaim Weizmann, first
President of Israel, to his
teacher, in his childhood,
are made available to The
Jewish News from the col-
lection of Rose Kaplan.
They were saved from her
husband's collection.
These letters are incorpo-
rated in the Weizmann
Archives in Rehovot and
were written by Weizmann
in 1885 to his teacher, Rabbi
Shlomo Sokolovsky:

How very glad I was to re-
ceive the precious letter
which came to me from you,
and how very pleased to
have your greetings to me in
that letter. In answer to
your letter, which is more
precious to me than any
wealth, I would reply that I
shall observe your com-
mand not to cast away be-
_ hind me our sacred tongue
and the sayings of our sages
of blessed memory because I
am bound to study the He-
brew language.
And please, my dear
teacher, do not imagine
that when I attend the

Gymnasium I shall throw
off the cloak of Judaism.
No! On no account. I
have determined in my
heart to observe Judaism
and I shall resist the
mockery of those who say
that one becomes a doc-
tor when he casts off his
faith. This is contrary to
learning and to civiliza-
tion.
Can such a one be called
"Aristocrat"? To cast his
faith behind his back. If that
be so, woe to you, Aristo,
that they who follow your
system should act in this
way! . .
From me, your pupil,
Chaim Weizmann

I am sending one of my
ideas for you to see, and that
concerns the Hevrat
Hovevei Zion (Lovers of
Zion) and Jerusalem which
are in our land. How lofty
and elevated the idea which
inspired our brethren the
sons of Israel to establish
the Hevrat Hovevei Zion.
Because by this we can re-
scue our wandering, op-
pressed people who are scat-

sanow and Dr. Pinsker and
all who have rallied be-
neath the flag of this
Society. We must also thank
the two patriots, Moshe
Montefiore and Rothschild.
In conclusion, we must
support this Society
which has understood
what lies before it and
perceived the evil
threatening us. There-
fore, the obligation rests
upon us to establish a
place to which we can
flee for help, since in
America, where knowl-
edge prevails, they will
CHAIM WEIZMANN
attack us. And in all the
tered in all corners of the countries of Africa in
world and have no place in general, and the State of
which to settle, and all will Morocco in particular,
attack us and the Jew is a we will be attacked and
burden on all the nations not be pitied.
Let us carry our banner to
and on all the kings of
Europe in general and on Zion and return to our first
the King of Russia in par- Mother upon whose knees
ticular. And this may be- we were born.
For why should we look to
come the "Beginning of the
the kings of Europe for com-
Redemption."
We must therefore sup- passion, that they should
port this esteemed Society, take pity upon us and give
and we must also thank all us a resting place for
the supporters of this naught! All have decided:
Society, such as Dr. Yas- The Jew must die, but
England will nevertheless
have mercy upon us. In con-
clusion, to Zion! — Jews —
to Zion! Let us go.

Romania Opens
Old Synagogue

BUCHAREST (JTA) —
More than 2,000 Jews from
Romania and abroad
attended ceremonies here
rededicating the Great
Synagogue which has been
fully restored since sustain-
ing severe damage in the
1977 earthquake.
Chief Rabbi Moshe Rosen
of Romania presided. Chief
Rabbi Immanuel
Jakobovits of Britain
headed a delegation of
Anglo-Jewish leaders. The
Great Synagogue, built in
1846, is an historic land-
mark in the Romanian capi-
tal.

In all ranks of life the
human heart yearns for the
beautiful; and the beautiful
things that God makes are
his gift to all alike.
