Cocktails will be served at 6. Co-Chairmen of the event are: I. William Sherr and David B. Holtzman. Guest speaker will be Martin Ag- ronsky. This year the Yeshivath Beth Yehudah Golden Torah Award will be pre- ad to David Silver for hi great and lasting contri- bution to the Jewish com- munity and for his selfless and devoted efforts t_o Torah-true education." Born in Poland, Silver made his way to the United States in 1928, and during the past 50 years has been actively in- volved in community causes. Silver is a past , president of Cong. Beth ' Achim and a past president of the Greater Detroit Jewish National Fund Council. He has been active in JNF fund- raising since age 15, a total of 65 years. In the early 1920s, he was chairman of the JNF in ) his district and a repre- sentative througout all of Poland. In 1922, Silver was the chairman of the Zionist Organization in his district, and in 1925 he was asked to organize the youth return- ing from the Polish army, ) which he organized as a para-military group known as the Hashachar. Most of these young men journeyed' to Israel and joined the Hagana. In 1953, Silver served as president of the JNF in De- troit and was instrumental in initiating its first annual dinner, honoring Gov. G. Mennen Williams and Sen. Phillip Hart. Silver served on the Jewish Community Council and worked on several of its committees. He is chairman for projects in the Labor Zionist movement and is a life member in the Zionist Organization of America. He served on the interfaith committee for Christians and Jews. In 1971, while on a trip to Israel with his wife, Wins Award otgiitt Margaret Winkelman will receive the Lady of Charity Award Saturday at the Knights of Charity Award dinner-dance at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Esther, Silver dedicated a Kupat Holim clinic and donated a wood in Old Jerusalem in the names of he and his wife. In 1973, he was honored by Israel Bonds. City Council of Ham- tramck adopted a resolution honoring Silver on Oct. 28. Silver recently celebrated his 80th birthday and he and his wife celebrated their 55th wedding an- niversary.
