BETH SHALOM Presents Housing Program Eases Problems of U.S. Olim NEW YORK — "Opera- tion Turnkey," a new con- cept in providing housing for groups of American Olim (immigrants) to Israel was put into practice re- cently, according to Charles Weinberg, senior adviser at the Jewish Agency. The plan is based on the idea of groups of American Jews purchasing entire apartment buildings di- rectly from Israeli building contractors, thus eliminat- ing such problems as pur- chasing land, hiring ar- chitects, contractors and other steps which new Olim often encounter. Available now, according to Weinberg, are seven major contracting firms with the plans and land to build almost 6,000 apart- ments, half of them in the Greater Jerusalem area. The builders are in a posi- tion to negotiate prices with interested groups who wish to buy. Weinberg believes that the turnkey program, coupled with the recent an- nouncement of Bank Tefakhot that it will soon be offering large U.S. dollar mortgages to Americans buying apartments in Is- rael, will be a big boost to American aliya.
