The Manufacturers Bank
hosted a champagne recep-
tion for architect Louis G.
Redstone and Ruth Red-
stone, co-authors of a new
book "Public Art — New
Directions" this week at the
bank's corporate headquar-
ters. The reception was held
in cooperation with the De-
troit Chapter of the Ameri-
can Institute of Architects
and the Engineering
Society of Detroit.
The book was written for
the professional in the arts,
architecture, engineering,
education and
environmental planning as
well as the general public. It
presents various techniques
and materials, many newly
developed, to record what
has been accomplished both
there and abroad to pro-
mote, sponsor, finance and
support art-in-architecture
projects.
A practicing architect
and watercolorist, Redstone
received the Gold Medal of
the Michigan Society of Ar-
chitects, its highest honor,
in 1978. He is the author of
The New Downtowns" and
"Art in Architecture,"
among other books. Mrs
Redstone, a Phi Beta Kappa
graduate of St. Lawrence
University, interviewed
many of the artists whose
work appears in "Public
Art."

Among the 2,500 friends
and colleagues gathered to
pay tribute to the American
composer were Isaac Stern,
Leonard Bernstein and New
York Mayor Ed Koch.
Copland conducted the
American Symphony Or-
chestra in his "Short Sym-
phony" (1933), "Eight
Poems of Emily Dickinson"
(1950), and a suite from his
1954 opera, "The Tender
Land." After the intermis-
sion, there was an unprog-
rammed performance of
Copland's "Fanfare for the
Common Man" and a sing-
along version of "Happy
Birthday."

Nothing is more certain
than that much of the force
as well as grace of
arguments, as well as of in-
structions, depends on their
conciseness.
