Dutch Open
New Synagogue
AMSTERDAM (JTA) —
The new synagogue of Al-
melo, financed almost
entirely by the municipality
of that small town in east-
ern Holland, was inaugu-
rated last week at cere-
monies attended by Mayor
Frederick Schneiders, Is-
raeli Ambassador Eytan
Ronn and local dignitaries.
It replaces the 19th Century
synagogue which survived
the Nazi occupation, only to
be demolished recently in
the interests of modern
town planning.
The new synagogue, lo-
cated on Church Square, in
the center of Almelo, is
much smaller than the orig-
inal. Its size reflects the
shrinkage of the local
Jewish community.
There were about 200
Jews in Almelo in 1945.
Today there are no more
than 45 in the town and
nearby villages and their
new house of worship has
only 45 seats. The bulk of
Almelo's Jews left over the
years, many moving to
Amsterdam or emigrating
to various countries, includ-
ing Israel.

Guest Speaker
1973. He appears fre-
quently on the PBS and
NBC television networks
as a commentator and
analyst of world affairs.
Kahn has long been
active in the development of
trade between Israel and
industries in the U.S. He
was one of the earliest im-
porters of Israeli products
into America and he has as-
sisted a number of Israeli
firms in setting up produc-
tion lines and export-trade
agreements with other
countries in the indus-
trialized world.
Guests at the annual
dinner will also learn of a
major new fund-raising
program initiated by the
Detroit Chapter — a project

American Friends' Serv-
ice Committee (Quakers),
whose treatment of the
Middle East problems had
been viewed as biased by Is-
rael's friends, has issued a
statement deploring recent
anti-Semitic incidents in
Europe and the U.S.
The statement was issued
by the Michigan area office
in Ann Arbor.
The statement said in
part, "We abhor anti-
Semitism and racism and
are committed to oppose
them. We will continue to
speak out on these issues,
and more insistently.
"Legitimate differences of
opinion about some Israeli
government policies or
some of the policies of Arab
governments and move-
ments must not be tainted
with anti-Semitism or ra-
cism."
